Box score | Game Log | Recap
The second game of Sunday's doubleheader was a single-sided affair as the Barracudas harrassed starting pitcher Benny Räber, and scored 13 runs off him in the first three innings. Worse though was the fact that the Challengers had to forfeit the game because they didn't have enough players in the top of the fifth inning.
The story: Down by 19-2 in the top of the fifth, the Challengers had no enthusiasm left to rally from that insurmountable lead. Coach Marvin Moore and several players got annoyed by the plate umpire's strike zone that kept shrinking and moving the longer the game lasted. Then, with no outs in the top of the fifth, shortstop Saentis Zeller lost his nerves and started cursing the plate umpire about his strike zone. The ump didn't waste any time to throw Zeller out of the game although Zeller never offended or insulted the ump personally. The Challengers were left with eight players on the field and none on the bench. They had to forfeit the game but are likely to protest the umpire's decision to throw Zeller out of the game.
Therefore, the stats for both teams won't count and the game is won 9-0 by the Barracudas. Noteable stats would have been Zeller's two hits and rookie Patrick Bosshard's solo homer in the bottom of the fourth. It would have been his third of the season and would have tied him for the team lead. The Barracudas had 11 hits, 3 of them home runs, before the game was called. Ueli von Burg belted his second and third homerun of the season to no avail.
