Challengers roll Eagles 7-3

The Challengers salvaged a split in Sunday's doubleheader by beating the Lucerne Eagles 7-3 behind newly acquired Clayton Carson's complete game gem.

Carson allowed only three runs – one of them unearned – on six hits and three walks, while also striking out eight.

Saentis Zeller led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Bryan Shemley and Chico Colindres also added two hits apiece.

Eagles starter Adam Greenberg lasted only four innings, allowing seven runs. But due to five errors in those four innings, all seven of those runs were unearned.

The Eagles scored first as they scored an unearned run on a botched throw by third baseman Juan Guzman on Marco Limacher's sacrifice bunt.

But the Challengers came right back and scored three times in the bottom half of the inning. Greenberg threw away the ball after Colindres bunted back to the mound, and Zeller's two-run double to the gap in right center gave the Challengers the lead for good.

The Eagles cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth, but the Challengers answered with four runs on two hits and two errors.

Stefan Haltmeier relieved Greenberg in the bottom of the fifth and shut the Challengers down for the rest of the way, but Carson and his defense didn't relinquish the lead anymore.
