Ladies dethroned by Flyers

The Ladies lost their 2007 Championship Series against the Therwil Flyers 1-2. After losing Game 1 on Saturday 12-14, the C’s came back strong, winning Game 2 6-1, as Flavia Von Meiss and Karin Mittelstädt had two hits apiece and Corinne Wengi belted her seventh double of the season, while Karen Heimgartner tossed a gem, allowing one run and five hits with one walk and 14 strikeouts.
The two teams had to play a winner-takes-it-all Game 3. The C’s took an early lead, as Leandra Simitovic, Heimgartner and Isabella Yaheya drove in three runs in the first inning. The Flyers cut the deficit to one, but Simitovic scored twice in the second and fourth inning to make it 5-2. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Flyers tied the game, before taking the lead in the fifth, as Sophie Zihlmann hit a RBI-double. The C’s again loaded the bases in the sixth, but scored only one run, as Wengi plated Simone Zurschmitten with a RBI-single. In the bottom half of the inning the Flyers scored the go-ahead run, as Lisa Domenghino crossed the plate on a RBI-groundout by Babsi Meierhans and they added one more on the only error by the Challengers defense for the final result of 8-6.
Alexia Zingg had three hits, while Simitovic allowed eight runs – one of them unearned – and ten hits with two strikeouts. All in all the C’s didn’t take advantage of their numerous scoring chances, as they stranded 14 baserunners.
Congratulations to the Flyers for winning their seventh Swiss Championship since 1987.
