Generalversammlung

Am Sonntag, 11. Januar fand im Restaurant Linde Oberstrass in Zürich die Generalversammlung des Challengers Baseball & Softball Clubs statt. Neu in den Vorstand wurden Simone Zurschmitten und Brigit Zuber gewählt, welche die zurückgetretenen Brigitte Burger und Harry Bregy ersetzen, welche die letzten beiden Jahre im Vorstand mitwirkten. Präsident Renato Staub wurde für ein weiteres Jahr im Amt bestätigt. Tobias Siegrist, Carlos Nepomuceno, Leandra Simitovic und Gabe Staub wurden von ihren jeweiligen Teams als “Most Valuable Player” ausgezeichnet.

Siegrist named MVP for third time

Tobias Siegrist earned his third MVP award, as he was presented with the trophy at the General Assembly on January 11. Siegrist led the Challengers with 20 RBI’s, 25 hits and 18 runs scored. He also finished second in doubles with 9, homers with 2, stolen bases with 10, batting average with .357, on-base percentage with .459 and slugging percentage with .571. Jesus Martinez set team-leading marks with five homers, a .367 batting average, a .474 on-base percentage and a .733 slugging percentage and finished second with 17 RBI’s, 22 hits and 16 runs scored, earning him the Best Batter award. Thomas Burger walked away with his second Best Pitcher award after receiving the trophy already in 2006, going 4-5 with a 4.47 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 54.1 innings pitched.

Simitovic honored

Leandra Simitovic received her second MVP award at the Challengers’ General Assembly on January 11. She led the Challengers with 22 hits, 28 runs scored and 21 walks and went 8-7 with a 5.80 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 82 innings pitched. Karen Heimgartner went 4-3 with a 2.18 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 41.2 innings pitched, earning her the Best Pitcher award. Karin Mittelstdt walked away with the Best Batter award after setting team highs with 28 runs scored, a .467 batting average and a .603 on-base percentage and finishing second in hits with 21, doubles with 2, stolen bases with 6 and walks with 15. Alexia Zingg was credited with her second Best Fielder award in a row. Andrea Wirth was named Most Improved Player, while Simona Cellar was named Rookie of the Year.

Heimgartner inducted into Walsh Wall of Fame

Karen Heimgartner was inducted into the Wall of Fame of Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio on Saturday, September 27. Heimgartner pitched four years for the Cavaliers from 1997 till 2000 and led Walsh to their first NAIA World Series appearance in 2000. She set record marks on the Softball-Team’s all-time list for games pitched with 111, games started with 92, complete games with 79, innings pitched with 668, and leads the all-time list with a 1.41 Earned Run Average, 612 strikeouts, 67 wins and four No-Hitters. Heimgartner played her third season with the Challengers in 2008.

1.Liga-Team dominates Submarines

The 1.Liga-Team beat the Romanshorn Submarines on Sunday, September 28 at Sissach in the round for fifth place. Thanks to a stellar offense and a solid defense the C’s cruised to a 15-2 victory over the Subs. Game 2 against the Geneva Dragons was declared a forfeit victory for the Challengers after the Dragons – once again – didn’t show up without announcing. The C’s face the Submarines again on Saturday, October 4 at Romanshorn Weitenzelg. There is also a game scheduled against the Dragons.
