C’s go down in local derby

The Challengers gave up four runs in the bottom of the first inning on Tuesday, August 26 en route to a 1-7 loss against the first placed Zürich Barracudas. The C's couldn't convert their scoring chances, as they produced only one run on twelve hits. The Barracudas (18-5) will finish the qualification round in first place and will have home field advantage thoughout the playoffs, while the Challengers (14-9) will battle with the Therwil Flyers (13-7) for second place.

Stadtderby am Dienstag Abend

Das NLA-Team tritt am Dienstag, 26. August zum fünften Stadtderby gegen den Tabellenführer Zürich Barracudas an. Für das Team von Headcoach Chris Palatinus geht es darum, den zweiten Platz in der Rangliste zu halten, um sich für die Playoff-Halbfinals das Heimrecht zu sichern. Von den bisherigen vier Derbys in dieser Saison gewannen jedoch die Barracudas deren drei, allerdings immer mit nur einem Run Differenz. Spielbeginn ist um 19.00 Uhr im Baseballstadion Heerenschürli.

Challengers roll over Eagles

The Challengers improved their record to 14-8, as they posted a 10-0 shutout victory over the Luzern Eagles on Saturday, August 23 at the Heerenschürli ballpark. Ryan Byrne was brilliant once more, as he tossed seven frames of one-hit ball with two walks while striking out 10. Byrne lowered his ERA to 1.41. The C's took a 3-0 lead into the second inning as Thomas Burger drove in Tobias Siegrist with an RBI-single to open the score and added two more in the fourth. Both Burger and Siegrist went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, while Robert Sedin drove in three runs in his farewell game for the Challengers. Sedin batted .393 with 131 hits, 64 RBI's and scored 103 runs and had a 15-11 record and a 2.51 ERA with 262 strikeouts in 218.2 innings pitched in his three seasons with the C's.

NLB-Team battles, remains unbeaten

The NLB-Team kept its perfect record alive with two close wins over the Embrach Mustangs on Saturday, August 23. The Challengers erased a seven-run deficit, as they edged the Mustangs 12-11 in Game 1. Carlos Nepomuceno had four hits, while Kurt Kovac and Daiki Sato delivered three hits each.
 
In the second game of the day the C's, trailing 1-8 in the top of the fourth inning, exploded for ten runs in the bottom of the fourth frame to eventually win 13-11. Yusuke Azuma had two hits and drove in three, while Francesco Falcone and Adrian Chines Amoros added two hits apiece. The C's will face the second placed Zürich Barracudas on August 30 for a night game.

Ladies sweep Devils, clinch playoff berth

The Softball Team Zürich swept the Wil Devils on Saturday, August 23 to reach the .500 mark and to clinch a playoff berth. Zürich erased a six run deficit and Corina Grass broke a 7-7 tie with a two-run shot in the top of the sixth inning, as the ladies rallied for a 14-10 win in Game 1. Grass went 3-for-4, while Leandra Simitovic and Simona Cellar delivered two hits and score twice each.
 
In Game 2 starter Tori Shepard kept the Devils' bats under control, as Zürich won 4-1 to finish the preeliminary round in third place with a 8-8 record. Zürich will face the Luzern Eagles for a best-of-three semi-final series with games 1 and 2 on September 13 at Reussbühl.

Drei Heimspiele am Samstag

 
Das NLA-Team empfängt am Samstag, 23. August die Luzern Eagles zu einem Night Game im Baseballstadion Heerenschürli. Es ist dies die fünfte Begegnung der beiden Teams in dieser Saison, wobei die Eagles drei der bisherigen vier Partien gewannen. Am vergangenen Samstag teilten sich die beiden Mannschaften die Punkte. Spielbeginn ist um 19.00 Uhr.
 

 
Das NLB-Team trifft am Samstag, 23. August im Baseballstadion Heerenschürli auf den letztjährigen NLA-Finalisten Embrach Mustangs. Die Challengers werden versuchen, ihre bislang perfekte Saison gegen den Kantonsrivalen weiterzuführen. Die Partien beginnen um 11.00 und 14.00 Uhr.
 
Das Softball Team Zürich reist am Samstag, 23. August nach Wil, wo es auf die Wil Devils treffen wird. Die Zürcherinnen benötigen noch einen Sieg, um sich die Qualifikation für die Playoffs zu sichern. Spielbeginn ist um 11.00 und 13.30 Uhr im Wiler Lindenhof.

Ladies take one from Eagles too

The Softball Team Zürich played back-to-back double headers this weekend. After a split with the Bern Cardinals on Saturday, the Team Zürich added another win on Sunday, August 17 against the Luzern Eagles at Reussbühl to improve its record to 6-8. Zürich already had a 12-9 lead in the fourth inning of Game 1, but the Eagles scored ten unanswered runs to eventually win 19-12. Tori Shepard had three of the four hits for Zürich, while Henna Määttä drove in two runs. Zürich bounced back in the second game of the day, as it posted a fine 12-3 victory. The team needs one more win in its last game day of the qualification round against the Wil Devils on August 23 to clinch a playoff berth.

Juveniles with third win of the season

 
The U12-Juveniles came back strong after the summer holidays, as the SG TruckStar/Challengers posted its third victory of the season on Sunday, August 17 at Hünenberg. In Game 1 the Hünenberg Unicorns proved to be too strong once again, as they beat the SG 17-6. In Game 2 the SG ended up as the game winner, as it celebrated a 12-10 victory over the SG Cardinals/Hunters/Frogs.
 
Die U12-Juveniles verzeichneten einen erfolgreichen Start nach der Sommerpause. Die SG TruckStar/Challengers feierte am Sonntag, 17. August in Hünenberg ihren dritten Saisonsieg. Zwar erwiesen sich die gastgebenden Unicorns einmal mehr als zu stark, die Innerschweizer gewannen Spiel 1 mit 17-6. Die SG verliess dafür im zweiten Spiel gegen die Cardinals/Hunters/Frogs das Feld mit 12-10 als Sieger. (Photo by TruckStar)

Winning streak stopped, C’s split with Eagles

The NLA-Team saw its winning streak halted at nine, as the Challengers split with the Luzern Eagles on Saturday, August 16 at the new ballpark at Reussbühl. It was a pitcher's duel in Game 2 with the Eagles taking the win by a score of 2-1. Lowuin Sacramento tossed 9.1 innings in his first start for the C’s allowing two runs – one earned – and six hits while striking out 11.
 
Prior to that the C's celebrated their ninth victory in a row, as they posted a 9-4 win Game 1. Eidrys Reyes broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run single in the seventh inning, before the C's added four more runs in the eight. Robert Sedin and Säntis Zeller had three hits each, while Harry Bregy and Tobias Siegrist scored two runs apiece. The C's remain in second place with a 13-8 record. The two teams will meet again on August 23 for a night game at the Heerenschürli ballpark.

NLB-Team adds another win

The NLB-Team posted its 12th win of the season, as the Challengers won 15-2 over the Thun Hunters on Saturday, August 16 at the Heerenschürli ballpark. Although the Hunters opened the score crossing the plate twice in the first frame, the C's sealed the deal already in the bottom half of the first inning. The Challengers scored 12 runs on seven hits, two walks and two hit batters for a 12-2 lead. Yusuke Azuma, Juan Bautista de la Rosa and Adderly Sarmiento delivered two hits apiece and five different players drove in two runs each, while Oli Christen gave up two runs and four hits with seven walks and seven strikeouts in 5 1-3 innings for his fourth win of the campaign. Game 2 had to be canceled due to heavy rain.
