Cards sweep Challengers by winning 5-2 in second game

After winning 7-4 in the first contest, the Bern Cardinals had a chance to clinch first place in the Preeliminary Round by winning the second game.

Harry Bregy lost his first game of the season.
And they did just that by scoring early and hanging on to a 5-2 victory.

Cardinal starter Severin Fries threw a complete-game four-hitter, allowing just two runs - one of them unearned. He just walked one batter and struck out seven.

The Cards scored first on Raphael Hänzi's RBI-single off starter Harry Bregy.

The Challengers took the lead in the second inning on two sac bunts and a throwing error by catcher Jose Castillo.

But the Cards came right back and also scored twice on Angelo Rodriguez' two-run single up the middle.

Both runs were unearned as second baseman Oliver Labhart dropped Gygax' easy pop fly with one out to prolong the inning.

<a href="http://www.challengers.ch/playerprofile/hardy-chris/?liga=NLA" title="See Player Profile for Chris Hardy">Chris Hardy</a> was the only Challenger with two hits, going 2-for-3.

In the last 4 1/2 innings, the only scores came on a wild pitch by Bregy in the fourth inning, and Ron Zimmermann's RBI-single in the fifth frame.

Fries dominated the Challengers in the second half, allowing only one baserunner as far as second base in the final four innings.

Bregy (2-1) wasn't much worse, allowing only two runs in the final four innings.

Only two of the five runs he allowed were earned.

But his performance wasn't good enough as his offense managed to get only four hits total off Fries.

Just like in the first game of the doubleheader, the two teams combined for only 10 hits.

Game notes
Bregy dropped his lifetime record against the Cardinals to 1-4, the worst against any team in the NLA. His ERA is a whopping 13.24 in 17 IP against them. ...Angelo Rodriguez of the Cardinals had a mixed day: He was the only Cardinal to get more than one hit as he singled twice and drove in two runs. But he also made three errors at second base.
