Challengers fall apart in second game, lose 14-7

Although the Challengers started better than in Game 1's shutout win, they eventually lost 14-7 to a well-hitting Reussbühl Eagles team.

 <a href="http://www.challengers.ch/playerprofile/lehmann-nick/?liga=NLA" title="See Player Profile for Nick Lehmann">Nick Lehmann</a> officially went only 0-for-1, but had a walk, a sac fly and a hit-by-pitch.
Nick Lehmann officially went only 0-for-1, but had a walk, a sac fly and a hit-by-pitch.
Too many errors in the field and the inability to hit the ball constantly throughout the whole game left the Challengers stunned and in disbelief upon so many chances not converted.

The Challengers managed to scrape together a lousy three hits against Eagle starter Marcel Enz.

Two of those hits came off Tobias Siegrist's bat as he singled and doubled and reached again on a base-on-balls in the seventh inning.

He also scored three of the Challengers' seven runs, but that was little comfort as his team now faces elimination from Playoff contention.

The Eagles managed to answer the Challengers' four runs in the first inning with four runs on their own.

Starter Roger Brunner (2-2) didn't find his form from last weekend that led to the Challengers' first Swiss Cup title in history.

He allowed nine runs - six of them unearned - on nine hits and two walks in only three innings of work.

In that time, the Challengers scored six runs of their own as Nick Lehmann's sac fly scored Siegrist and Patrick Zöllig was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third inning.

Harry Bregy came on to relieve.

He did fine, but his defense let him down and committed three errors and four passed balls during his stint on the mound.

Only two of the five runs he allowed were earned, but he also walked five batters and struck out four.

The Eagles continued the romp and scored five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined.

With that loss, the Challengers are in third place with a 2-4 record and need to win at least one of the final two games against the Bern Cardinals on September 4 to qualify for the Final Four Semifinals.

Game notes
Brunner's strikeout of Marcel Enz in the third inning was his 200th in his NLA-career. ...The loss was the first against the Eagles since June 8, 1997. Since then, the Challengers have won 19 consecutive Championship games plus two Cup games.
