Mustangs better Challengers 9-4

The Embrach Mustangs played their usual style of baseball, outhitting and outrunning their opponents, just as in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader.

Siegrist reached four out of five times with two singles, a base-on-balls and an error.
Siegrist reached four out of five times with two singles, a base-on-balls and an error.
Thomas Fasching went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI's, Chris Byrnes and Korey Kovac had two hits apiece, and Roger Savoldelli pitched nine innings for his league-leading fifth complete game of the season.

The only consolation for the Challengers was that they managed to up his ERA from 1.04 to 1.24 by scoring two earned runs.

The Challengers jumped out of the gates in the first inning as Carl Conway, Tobias Siegrist and Patrick Maier laced together three consecutive singles for a 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs tied the score in the bottom of the second inning on two hit-by-pitches, a single and a walk off Thomas Burger.

Three more runs in the fourth inning sealed Burger's day. Josh Crouse had a two-out RBI-single, and two walks later, Fasching followed up with a two-run single that extended the Mustangs' lead to 4-1.

Siegrist took over in the bottom of the fifth, but was quickly tagged for two runs as the first four batters reached on three singles and an error by shortstop Saentis Zeller.

The Challengers scored three times in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Mustangs' lead to 6-4. Siegrist led off with a single, and Maier reached on an error by first baseman Byrnes.

Jesus Martinez plated Siegrist with an RBI-single, Thomas Blank's run-scoring ground out brought home Maier, and Bryan Shemley batted in Martinez with a two-out RBI-single.

But in the bottom half of the inning, the Mustangs scored twice on Byrnes' two-run double with no outs.

Chris Palatinus took over on the mound and retired the next five batters he faced.

A single and a stolen base by Andrew Wong with two outs in the seventh, followed by Fasching's RBI-double gave the Mustangs a 9-4 lead.

The Challengers again were helpless against Savoldelli's pitching in the final three innings, getting only four baserunners on a dropped third strike, a single and two walks.

The loss assures the Mustangs their first season series win against the Challengers ever.

Game notes
Shemley's RBI-single in the sixth was his 100th in the NLA. ...Zeller was activated from the disabled list on which he landed with a strained hamstring. In the bottom of the fourth, he replaced Yanik Probst who twisted his back after diving for a grounder.
