Challengers drop season opener 11-1 to Flyers

The Challengers managed only one run in their 2016 season opener and lost 11-1 to the Therwil Flyers.

Kurt Kovac started and lasted only three innings in which he allowed six runs on five hits and two walks.

His counterpart Lucas Croton lasted four innings, but had to leave in the fifth inning after straining his shoulder.

Stefan Koller got the emergency call and he responded by tossing four shutout innings for the win.

The game was highlighted by Daniel Eichenberger’s three-run homer in the third inning that put the Flyers up 6-0.

Tobias Siegrist pitched four innings in relief for the Challengers, allowing only a single run in that stretch, while also striking out five.

Saentis Zeller provided the offensive spark for the Challengers, ripping two doubles.

Game notes
For the first time since April 21, 2007, the Challengers lost their season opener due to the 10-run mercy rule.
