Lions defeat Challengers 5-3 behind strong pitching and early offense

The Zürich Lions secured a 5-3 victory over the Challengers, led by starting pitcher Mateo Benitez Pe., who pitched six scoreless innings allowing just two hits, and early run production from Mario Dreiding and Ramon Antonio Rosario Sepulveda.

The Zürich Lions struck early in the top of the first inning when Mario Dreiding drove in Pedro Angel Lopez Suriel and Pedro Antonio Mateo Benitez with a two-run single to center field. The Lions added another run in the second when Ramon Antonio Rosario Sepulveda stole third base and scored on an error by catcher Jack Siemers. In the fourth inning, Rosario Sepulveda pushed the lead to 4-0 with an RBI single down the right-field line to score Mateo Benitez. Lions starter Mateo Benitez Pe. held the Challengers off the scoreboard through six innings, allowing just two hits and eight walks while striking out four. The Challengers mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three unearned runs capitalizing on a single by Leonel Yemalla Hernandez Reyes, walks, passed balls, and defensive errors by second baseman Lopez Suriel and catcher Luis Hanel Novas Gil. The Lions answered back in the top of the seventh inning when Abel Fernandez hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Mateo Benitez to make it 5-3. Anthony Alejandro Ventura Rosado came on in relief for the bottom of the seventh and struck out three batters to lock down the save. Challengers starting pitcher Simon Steffen took the loss after pitching seven innings, giving up 11 hits and four earned runs.
