Challengers edge Eagles 3-2 in extra-inning walk-off

The Challengers pulled off a 3-2 victory over the Luzern Eagles in eight innings, capped by Mia Matas's walk-off RBI single. Winning pitcher Kirsten Schmidt tossed eight strong innings with 10 strikeouts and zero walks, while Luzern starter Rio Sanchez struck out nine without allowing an earned run over seven innings.

The Luzern Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Melanie Keller doubled, advanced to third on Alexandra Aregger's sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rio Sanchez. Luzern extended its advantage to 2-0 in the top of the fourth after Flavia Crameri reached on an error, stole third base, and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Noelani Scazzariello. The Challengers responded in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score 2-2. Simona Cellar reached on an error and later scored on a passed ball, before Mia Matas hit an RBI double to right field to score Carmen Lutz-Demetz. Pitching dominated the remainder of regulation. Schmidt retired Luzern cleanly through the seventh, finishing her eight-inning effort allowing just three hits, one earned run, and no walks with 10 strikeouts. Sanchez threw seven innings for Luzern, allowing seven hits and two unearned runs while striking out nine and walking two. In the top of the eighth inning, Luzern's tie-breaker runner Keller was caught stealing before Schmidt struck out Aregger and retired Sanchez on a groundout. In the bottom of the eighth, tie-breaker runner Lutz-Demetz advanced to third on a passed ball. After Schmidt and Karen Elizabeth Hendren were intentionally walked to load the bases, Matas singled to right field to drive home Lutz-Demetz and seal the 3-2 victory for the Challengers.
