Eagles defeat Challengers 4-1 behind strong pitching from Rio Sanchez

Rio Sanchez tossed a complete game allowing no earned runs with nine strikeouts as the Luzern Eagles secured a 4-1 victory over the Challengers. Despite an 11-strikeout performance from losing pitcher Ki. Schmidt, the Eagles capitalized on opportunistic baserunning and solid hitting from Alexandra Aregger.

The Luzern Eagles took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Melanie Keller walked, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch. The Eagles expanded their lead in the bottom of the third. Keller reached on an error, stole second, and then stole home. Alexandra Aregger followed with a single and stole second before scoring on an RBI single by Rio Sanchez to push the lead to 3-0. The Challengers answered in the top of the fifth inning when Leandra Simitovic walked and eventually scored following defensive errors by Luzern. However, the Eagles responded immediately in the bottom half of the fifth. Keller reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by Aregger, extending the lead to 4-1. Sanchez shut down the Challengers over the final two frames to secure the win, finishing with nine strikeouts and just four hits allowed over seven innings. Schmidt took the loss for the Challengers despite striking out 11 batters over six innings.
