Am Dienstag, 26. Juni treffen um 19.00 Uhr im Baseballstadion Heerenschürli die NLA-Teams der Zürich Barracudas und die Challenegrs zum vierten Stadtderby der Saison aufeinander. Die Challengers gewann zwei der drei bisherigen Begegnungen zuletzt am Samstag Abend mit 6-4. Im Kampf um die Playoffplätze sind die fünftplatzierten Challengers dringend auf einen weiteren Derbysieg angewiesen, liegen sie doch noch immer 1.5 Spiele hinter dem Stadtrivalen.
Am Donnerstag, 28. Juni kommt es um 19.00 Uhr auf der Klopstockwiese zum Stadtderby der Softballerinnen, wo sich ebenfalls die Challengers und die Barracudas gegenüberstehen. Die Barracudas gewannen bislang alle drei Duelle gegen die Challengers, wobei die Partien mit 13-7 nach Extra-Inning, 9-7 und 7-6 immer äusserst knapp ausgingen. Mit dem ersten Saisonerfolg gegen die Barracudas könnten die Challengers in der Tabelle wieder mit dem Stadtrivalen gleichziehen.

Zwei Night Games in dieser Woche
Challengers upset Barracudas
The Challengers stopped the Barracudas’ five-game winning streak on Saturday night, June 23, as the C’s edged the Barracudas 6-4. The Barracudas outhit the C’s 13-6 and erased a three-run deficit to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth frame, but the C’s set the last exclamation point in the top of the ninth. Harry Bregy, in his first game since August 2008, reached base by a hit by pitch and later scored the game-winning run, as the Barracudas misplayed Luigi Cinardi’s ground ball with two outs, that enabled also Stephan Pribitzer to cross the plate to make it 6-4.
Andrea Girasole allowed four runs and 13 hits with no walks and five strikeouts in eight innings of work for his fifth win of the season, while closer Tobias Siegrist retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to notch his first save of the year.
The two teams will face each other again on Tuesday, June 26 for another night game at the Heerenschürli ballpark.
Challengers move over .500
The Challengers moved over .500 for the first time in 2012 after sweeping the Luzern Eagles on Sunday, June 17 at the Heerenschürli ballpark. Andrea Girasole tossed seven dominant innings, as he allowed one run, two hits and three walks while striking out eight and the offense scored five times in the sixth inning to make it 6-0, as the Challengers posted a 9-5 victory in Game 1 over the Eagles.
The C’s had also a good start in Game 2, as they opened the score in the first inning to make it 3-0. The Eagles answered with two runs in the second frame and four in the fourth to make it 6-3, but the C’s battled hard and turned the game around again en route to an 11-7 win. Fabio Aimi went 4-for-5 and Luigi Cinardi drove in three runs, while Tobias Siegrist and Chris Palatinus scored three runs apiece. The Challengers remain in fifth place, but improved their record to 6-5.
NLA games postponed
The NLA games between the Luzern Eagles and the Challengers have been canceled due to heavy rain and an unplayable field. No make-up date has been announced so far. The two teams will face each other on Sunday, June 17 at the Heerenschürli ballpark.

The Challengers saw their four-game winning streak halted, as the Barracudas took the Wednesday night game at the Heerenschürli ballpark posting a 6-2 victory over the C’s. Starter Tobias Siegrist had not enough support from his offense and the defense committed several costly errors, as the Barracudas scored three times in the fourth and seventh innings each. The Challengers scored their only two runs in the bottom of the second frame to cut the deficit to 2-3, as Robert Sedin and Bryan Shemley singled in one run apiece.
Kurt Kovac and Robert Sedin led the Challengers’ offense with two hits each, while Tobias Siegrist allowed six runs – only one of them earned – and seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
The C’s remain in fifth place with a 4-5 record. They will face next the Luzern Eagles on Sunday, June 10 at Reussbühl.
Night Game am Mittwoch
Die Challengers und die Barracudas bestreiten am Mittwoch, 6. Juni ein Night Game im Baseballstadion Heerenschürli. Es ist das zweite Aufeinandertreffen innert vier Tagen. Am Samstag wandelten die Challengers einen 1-5 Rückstand in einen 9-5 Sieg um und gewannen damit zum vierten Mal in Folge. Mit einem weiteren Erfolg könnten die Challengers den Stadtrivalen vom vierten Rang in der Tabelle verdrängen. Das Spiel beginnt um 19.00 Uhr.

The Challengers improved their record to .500, as they posted a 9-5 come from behind victory over their cross-town rivals Barracudas on Saturday night at the Heerenschürli ballpark. The C’s opened the score in the bottom of the fourth frame, but the Barracudas answered right away with five runs of their own. But the C’s erased the four-run deficit in the fifth and sixth innings, before Thomas Blank broke a 5-5 tie with a two-run double, that drove in Tobias Siegrist and Robert Sedin to make it 7-5 in the bottom of the eight inning. Fabio Aimi with a RBI-single and Stephan Pribitzer with a sac fly added two insurance runs to make it 9-5.
Andrea Girasole tossed 8 2-3 strong innings allowing five runs, only two of them earned, and eight hits with seven strikeouts, while closer Thomas Burger recorded the last out with two runners on base for his first save of the sesaon. Säntis Zeller had a game-high three hits including a RBI-triple, while Tobias Siegrist and Bryan Shemley had two hits apiece.
The Challengers will host the Barracudas again for another night game on Wednesday, June 6 at the Heerenschürli ballpark.
Challengers best Lions
The Zurich Challengers extended their winning streak to three games, as they beat the Zurich Lions on Thursday, May 24 at the Heerenschürli ballpark. After an early rain delay the C’s worked the switches, as they scored three runs in the third and added another two runs in the fourth frame to make it 6-0. And the C’s selt the deal, scoring ten times in the fifth inning to eventually win 17-0.
Andrea Girasole (2-2) and Tobias Siegrist combined for a shutout victory, while Robert Sedin drove in three runs with two doubles and every Challengers starter scored a run. The Challengers are now in fifth place with a 3-4 record. They will face the Zurich Barracudas on June 2 and June 6 in night games at the Heerenschürli ballpark.
Drei Challengers im Nati-Kader
Die Challengers Spieler Andrea Girasole, Tobias Siegrist und Säntis Zeller wurden von Headcoach Andy Fleischacker ins 21-köpfige Kader des Schweizer Nationalteams für das Finkstonball Turnier im österreichischen Attnang-Puchheim berufen, welches vom 26. bis 28. Mai stattfindet.
