Die Swiss Baseball and Softball Federation (SBSF) lanciert die Swiss Baseball und Softball Academy. Die Academy ist ein neues Programm zur Förderung des Nachwuchses im Schweizer Baseball und Softball. An drei regionalen Leistungszentren (Bern, Zürich, Wil) werden jeweils am ersten Mittwoch jeden Monats Academy-Trainings abgehalten. Für die Aufnahme in die Academy veranstaltet der Schweizer Verband am Mittwoch, 19. Mai von 15.00 bis 18.00 Uhr ein Try-out für 11- 18-jährige.
Die Try-outs im Stadion Heerenschürli stehen den Junioren der Barracudas, Challengers, Eighters und Lions offen.

NLB-Team cannot top Devils

The NLB-Team is still seeking for the first victory of the season, after losing twice to the Wil Devils on Sunday, May 16.
The Devils scored four runs in the first inning, but the C’s answered by four runs of their own. After exchanging zeros in the next two frames, four errors from the Challengers’ defense enabled the Devils to make it 8-4. And the Devils scored three insurance runs on another costly error in the seventh to make it 11-5. The C’s cut the deficit to three, but the Devils eventually posted an 11-8 win.
Roger Burger, Bryan Shemley and Yanik Probst delivered two hits apiece, while Dean Scherbaum was given the loss, as he allowed six runs – only one earned – six hits and six walks and two strikeouts in six innings.
In Game 2 the two teams were head-to-head again. Patrick Maier tossed six magnificient innings for the Challengers, as he allowed only one unearned run and three hits with one walk and thirteen strikeouts. But it was not enough, as the C’s stranded a total of eleven runners and the Devils held on for a 3-1 win over the C’s, who have now a dismal 0-4 record, despite four good performances so far.

Ladies lost twice to Eagles

The Softball-Team was swept by the Luzern Eagles on Saturday, May 15 at the Klopstockwiese. The Challengers pitchers struggled with the constant rain and the low temperatures, as the Eagles posted a 13-3 victory over the C’s in Game 1.
Starter Andrea Wirth was credited with the loss after allowing five runs in the first inning. Simone Zurschmitten took control for the next couple of innings, as the C’s cut the deficit to three runs after three innings, but the only error by the Challengers defense and six consecutive walks in the fourth increased the gap to ten runs.
Nadja Critelli led the Challengers offense with two hits, one RBI and a run scored, Alexia Zingg delivered her second double of the season and Celine Welti and Zurschmitten had a hit and scored a run each, while Nancy Plamondon made her debut in blue and red.
Game 2 saw a pitcher’s duel between Karen Heimgartner and Kirsten Rowell. Heimgartner gave up six hits and two earned runs, while stirking out ten in what was another quality start, but her effort was not enough, as the C’s lost to the Eagles 0-4.
Rowell pitched a complete game shutout against the C’s, as she surrendered just three hits on thirteen strikeouts.

Eisheilige bringen Spielplan durcheinander

Der Regen macht dem Baseball-Spielplan einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Die NLA-Partien zwischen den Challengers und den Embrach Mustangs vom Samstag, 15. Mai wurden aufgrund des Regens abgesagt. Ein Nachholtermin steht noch nicht fest.
Auch die U15 Cadets Spiele vom Samstag, 15. Mai in Wittenbach gegen die Sissach Frogs und die Wittenbach Vikings wurden infolge des anhaltenden Regens abgesagt. Ein Nachholtermin wurde noch nicht bekannt gegeben.

Challengers im Grosseinsatz

Das Softball-Team empfängt die Luzern Eagles am Samstag, 15. Mai für ihren Home Opener. Die Challengers bestreiten ihren ersten Ernstkampf seit dem 18. April, während die Innerschweizerinnen bereits zwei Siege gegen den amtierenden Meister Therwil Flyers holen konnten. Die Spiele beginnen um 11.00 Uhr und 13.30 Uhr auf der Klopstockwiese.

Das NLB-Team feiert seine Premiere im neuen Baseballstadion Heerenschürli, wenn sie am Sonntag, 16. Mai die Wil Devils empfangen. Das junge Team der Challengers versucht seinen ersten Saisonsieg zu feiern, nachdem der Auftakt gegen die Bern Cardinals mit zwei Niederlagen endete. Die Spiele beginnen um 11.00 Uhr und 14.00 Uhr.

Zweiter Spieltag der U18-Junioren

Die U18-Junioren trugen am Sonntag, 9. Mai in Embrach ihren zweiten Spieltag aus. Die Challengers trafen dabei auf die Spielgemeinschaft der Rainbows/Lions/Bandits, welche den Challengers zudem mit einigen Spielern ausgeholfen haben. Im ersten Spiel des Tages brachten die Challengers ihren Vorsprung nicht über die Distanz und wurden von den Rainbows/Lions/Bandits noch mit 7-6 abgefangen. Spiel 2 ging dann mit 8-6 an die Challengers. Der nächste U18-Spieltag findet am 5. Juni statt.

Challengers stay at .500

The Challengers endured their third straight loss, as they missed several scoring chances, before throwing the game away in the bottom of the 11th inning against the Lausanne Indians on Sunday, May 9.
With the game tied at 3-3 the C’s loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 11th inning, but two line drives right into the gloves of the Indians’ defense ended the threat. In the bottom half of the frame the Indians had the game winning run on third with one out, but the C’s tagged the runner out in a run-down between third base and home. Meanwhile Fabrice Gendre tried to advance to second and eventually scored, when a overthrow to second sailed into center field.
Challengers starter Thomas Burger left the game in the second inning due to a blister. Chris Palatinus tossed nine strong innings of relief for the C’s, as he allowed two runs and five hits with three walks and six strikeouts, but was outdueled by Indians starter Damien Baumann, who gave up three runs – one earned – and 11 hits with one walk and sent the C’s to their third straight loss.
Game 2 was all Challengers, as they cruised to a 12-1 victory over the Indians. James Sanders (2-0) pitched five scoreless innings, while Patrick Maier made his debut in blue and red, working two innings of relief.

Challengers treffen auf Indians

Nachdem die Spiele vom letzten Wochenende ins Wasser gefallen sind, haben die Challengers am Sonntag, 9. Mai die nächste Gelegenheit ihr Punktekonto zu äufnen. Die Challengers (2-2) treffen im Stadion Heerenschürli auf die Lausanne Indians (0-6). Die Spiele beginnen um 11 und 14 Uhr.
Derweil spielen ebenfalls am Sonntag, 9. Mai die U18 Junioren der Challengers (1-1) in Embrach gegen die Spielgemeinschaft der Rainbows/Lions/Bandits (2-0). Spielbeginn ist um 10 und 13 Uhr in Embrach PZ Hard.

Der Doubleheader zwischen den Challengers und den Therwil Flyers vom Sonntag, 2. Mai wurde aufgrund des heftigen Regens abgesagt. Die Challengers treffen nun am Sonntag, 9. Mai im Stadion Heerenschürli auf die Lausanne Indians.
Die Softball-Spiele zwischen den Challengers und den Luzern Eagles mussten ebenfalls aufgrund des Regens abgesagt werden. Beide Teams treffen nun am Samstag, 15. Mai auf der Zürcher Klopstockwiese aufeinander.
