Die Schweizer Baseball Nationalmannschaft verpasste die Qualifikation für die Baseball Europameisterschaft 2010 am European Qualifier Tournament, das vom 9. bis 12. Juli im Pioneers Ballpark in Antwerpen, Belgien ausgetragen wurde. Die Eidgenossen beendeten das Turnier im dritten Rang, nachdem sie im Platzierungsspiel gegen Malta mit 12-6 obsiegten. Reto Siegel und Tobias Siegrist führten die Schweizer Offensive mit je drei Hits an, während Christoph Beyeler sechs solide Innings pitchte, in welchen er zwei Runs und vier Hits abgab und neun Strikeouts verbuchen konnte. Den Turniersieg sicherte sich Gastgeber Belgien mit einem 3-1 Erfolg über Österreich.

Eagles, Rain stop Softball Team
The Softball-Team lost its third game in a row on Saturday, July 12 at Reussbühl. The Challengers erased a five-run deficit in the last two innings before a 40-minute rain delay, that occured in the middle of the Challengers’ five-run sixth inning, stopped the threat and the C’s blew a three-run lead in the bottom half of the inning after play was resumed to eventually lose 14-15 against the strong Reussbühl Eagles. Karen Heimgartner and Leandra Simitovic had two hits and scored two runs each, while Karin Mittelstädt scored three runs and Sandrine Montandon reached base four times and crossed the plate twice for the Challengers. But things got even worse for the blue and red in Game 2. The C’s built a 11-2 lead, as Corinne Wengi opened the score with a two-run double and Alexia Zingg and Ziegylou Wehrli had two hits apiece, while Karen Heimgartner allowed a pair of unearned runs and two hits with ten strikeouts, as the umpires had to call the game after four innings – just six outs before it would have been an official game – due to heavy and constant rain. According the official rules the game has to be replayed from the beginning. The game is rescheduled for Sunday, August 3 at Reussbühl.

Juli im Pioneers Ballpark in Antwerpen, Belgien ausgetragen wird. Die Eidgenossen unterlagen am Freitag, 11. Juli Gastgeber Belgien mit 5-12. Die wegen Regens auf Freitag verschobene Partie begann für die Eidgenossen vielversprechend, als Stefan Koller gleich im ersten Inning das 1-0 erzielen konnte. Doch die Antwort der Gastgeber fiel heftig aus. Nach dem Ausgleich im ersten Abschnitt scorten sie im zweiten Durchgang gleich acht Runs zur vorentscheidenden 9-1 Führung. Die Schweiz verkürzte durch RBI’s von Angelo Rodriguez und Reto Siegel im dritten Inning auf 3-9 und kamen im achten Abschnitt nach einem 2-run Single von Catcher Tobias Siegrist gar auf 5-9 heran. Den Belgiern gelangen jedoch postwendend weitere drei Runs zum Endstand von 12-5.
Nach knapp 90 Minuten Pause trafen die Schweizer im zweiten Spiel des Tages auf Malta. Während Stefan Koller vier Hits und Säntis Zeller und Severin Fries je drei Hits erzielten, steuerte Tobias Siegrist seinen zweiten Triple des Turniers zum letztlich ungefährdeten 16-6 Sieg bei. Starter Thomas Burger pitchte vier Innings mit 2 unearned Runs, einem Hit, vier Walks und neun Strikeouts, während Reliever Beni Montag mit dem Win ausgezeichnet wurde. Er pitchte zwei Innings mit zwei unearned Runs, zwei Hits und drei Strikeouts. Die Schweiz trifft am Samstag, 12. Juli um 10.00 Uhr im Spiel um Platz drei erneut auf Malta.
Schweiz vs. Belgien verschoben
Der zweite Auftritt der Schweizer Baseball Nationalmannschaft am European Qualifier Tournament, das vom 9. bis 12. Juli im Pioneers Ballpark in Antwerpen, Belgien ausgetragen wird, musste wegen heftigen Regens verschoben werden. Die Partie zwischen den Eidgenossen und Gastgeber Belgien wurde neu auf den Freitag, 11. Juli angesetzt. Spielbeginn ist um 10.00 Uhr.

Schweiz verliert Eröffnungsspiel
Die Schweizer Baseball Nationalmannschaft verlor ihr erstes Spiel am European Qualifier Tournament, das vom 9. bis 12. Juli im Pioneers Ballpark in Antwerpen, Belgien ausgetragen wird. Die Eidgenossen unterlagen Österreich mit 2-10. Allerdings war die Partie lange auf des Messers Schneide. Pinch Runner Chris Palatinus verkürzte im achten Inning auf 1-2, doch die Österreicher machten mit acht Runs im letzten Schlagdurchgang alles klar. Tobias Siegrist erzielte danach noch einen Triple und scorte nach einem RBI-Groundout von Säntis Zeller zum Endstand von 2-10. Die Schweiz trifft am Donnerstag, 10. Juli auf Gastgeber Belgien. Spielbeginn ist um 18.30 Uhr.

In Game 1, the Challengers’ worst performance of the season, the defense committed eight errors that led to eight unearned runs, while Cardinals starter Pamela Kellenberger kept the offense quiet allowing only six hits and two walks, as the C’s lost 6-13. Game 2 saw a pitcher’s duel between Nathalie Brown for the Cards and Karen Heimgartner for the Challengers with an unfortunate finish for the blue and red. The Challengers erased a two-run deficit in the fourth but missed to score the game-winning run in the fourth and seventh frame to eventually lose 3-7 after extra innings. Brown pitched eight strong innings for the Cards, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out sixteen, while Heimgartner ended up with the loss going the distance, giving up seven runs – three earned – on six hits while striking out fourteen. The C’s will face the Reussbühl Eagles on Saturday July, 12 at Reussbühl for their last games of the preeliminary round.

They scored five runs on four hits and two errors by the Challengers’ defense in the second and added three more runs in the third on two hits and four errors to make it 9-3. Kellenberger retired nine of eleven batters she faced from the first to the fourth inning, before giving up a walk to Sandrine Montandon and a single to Flavia Von Meiss. The Challengers came back into the game, as Alexia Zingg delivered a two-run single and Leandra Simitovic added a RBI-double to cut the deficit to three runs. But the Cards were on fire. After a lead-off double by Cornelia Noti and a triple by Fränzi Corradi, the Challengers committed another two costly errors, allowing the Cards to score another four runs to make it 13-6. Leandra Simitovic (7-2) allowed thirteen runs – only five earned – and eleven hits with one walk and two strikeouts, while Karin Mittelstädt and Simitovic had two hits apiece for the Challengers.

But the Cards’ defense ended the threat, as they nailed Simone Zurschmitten between third and home, trying to score the leading run. The Challengers again stranded runners on second and third in the sixth frame. And they had some bad luck as well in the seventh, as Alexia Zingg’s linedrive dropped an inch outside the right foulline in deep right field for what would have been a triple. The two teams had to play a tie-breaking extra-inning and the Cards saved the best for last. They scored five runs in the eight on four hits to put things out of reach for the Challengers. Karin Mittelstädt added one more run for the C’s on a sac fly by Simitovic in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-7 for the final score. Nathalie Brown pitched eight strong innings for the Cards, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out sixteen, while Heimgartner ended up with the loss going the distance, giving up seven runs – three earned – on six hits while striking out fourteen. Heimgartner also led the offense with two hits and reaching base four times.
The C’s will face the Reussbühl Eagles on Saturday July, 12 at Reussbühl for their last games of the preeliminary round.
Ladies face Cards at the Klopstockwiese
The Softball-Team (9-1) will face their 2007 playoff semi-final opponent the Bern Cardinals (4-6) on Saturday, July 5 at the Klopstockwiese. The Cards need at least one win to keep their playoff hopes alive, while the C’s would clinch first place after the preeliminary round with two victories over the Cards. The games start at 11am and 1.30pm.

Das bereits 9. Challengers Family & Friends Tournament fand am Sonntag, 29. Juni zum zweiten Mal auf der Klopstockwiese statt. Getreu der Tradition traten wiederum fünf Teams aus aktuellen und ehemaligen Spielern, deren Familien und Freunden an, um die begehrte Trophäe zu gewinnen. Bei herrlichen äusseren Bedingungen kämpften über 70 Challengers & Friends während fast sechs Stunden um Hits, Runs & Outs. In einem spannenden Endspiel siegte das Team Chris gegen das Team Ysa mit 12-5. Der dritte Rang ging an das Team Party vor dem Team Old School und dem Team Wallis. Der Dank geht an alle Helferinnen und Helfer sowie an alle Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer, die das Plauschturnier erneut zu einem grossen Erfolg machten.
