The Challengers ended their four game losing streak with two wins against the Wil Devils on Saturday, May 3 at the Heerenschürli. Jesus Martinez homered twice and Säntis Zeller had a homer and two doubles, while Thomas Burger allowed two runs – none earned – in seven dominant innings, as the C’s posted a 10-8 victory in Game 1. Zeller doubled three times in Game 2, while Thomas Landis allowed four runs – three earned – and five hits in six effective innings for his 98th career win, as the C’s swept the Devils with an 11-4 victory.

The Challengers NLA-Team (1-5) look to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat when they continue their homestand on Saturday, May 3 playing a double-header with the Wil Devils (1-3). The games start at 11am and 2pm at the Heerenschürli.
The Softball-Team (4-0) will try to extend their perfect start into the 2008 campaign on Sunday, May 4 when they face the Hünenberg Unicors (0-4) at Hünenberg. The games start at 11am and 1.30pm.
The 1.Liga-Team is idle. The games originally scheduled for Sunday, May 4 were postponed to Saturday, June 28.
Junioren Nationalmannschaften in Therwil
Die Schweizer U18 und U15 Nationalteams nehmen am 3. und 4. Mai am Internationalen Junioren Turnier in Therwil teil. Die Schweizer treffen dabei auf den deutschen U15 Meister Erbach Grasshoppers, die Borgerhout Squirrels aus Belgien, die Therwil Flyers und ein U15 All-Star Team. Von den Challengers sind Ryan Engesser, Samuel Hauser, Simon Saxer und Gabe Staub mit dabei.

After starting the season with two wins against the defending champion Therwil Flyers, the Softball-Team stays unbeaten, as the C’s won twice on Saturday, April 26 against the Geneva Dragons at the Klopstockwiese. Simitovic allowed one run and four hits, walked only one and struck out two for her third win of the season, while Karin Mittelstädt, Ziegylou Wehrli, Isabella Yaheya and Simitovic had two hits apiece and Simone Zurschmitten drove in three runs. Alexia Zingg and Leandra Simitovic had three hits each, while Zingg and Simona Cellar scored three runs apiece and the two teams combined for 18 errors, as the Challengers posted a wild 14-11 victory in Game 2. Leandra Simitovic pitched four 1/3 strong innings and the Challengers beat the Geneva Dragons 14-7 in Game 1. Simitovic allowed one run and four hits, walked only one and struck out two for her third win of the season, while Karin Mittelstädt, Ziegylou Wehrli, Isabella Yaheya and Simitovic had two hits apiece and Simone Zurschmitten drove in three runs.
The Challengers had a good start into the game. Corinne Wengi capped the first inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 4-0 for the blue and red. In the third inning Headcoach Willy Schaub handed the ball to Sandrine Montandon. Some walks and a crucial error brought the Dragons back into the game, as they led 6-5 after four innings. But the Challengers saved the best for last. RBI-singles by Simitovic, Mittelstädt, Zurschmitten, a run-scoring double by Simona Cellar and a RBI-single by Andrea Wirth made it 12-6 after five innings, before Pinch Hitter Elisabete Vieira’s RBI-single made it 14-7 to end the game.
Alexia Zingg and Leandra Simitovic had three hits each, while Zingg and Simona Cellar scored three runs apiece and the two teams combined for 18 errors, as the Challengers posted a wild 14-11 victory in Game two.
The C’s had another good start, this time against Geneva’s American pitcher Replogle. After former Dragons player Daniela Robotti crossed the plate to make it 4-0, Brigit Zuber reached base with her first hit of the season. The Dragons tried to throw her out at second enabling Simona Cellar to steal home to make it 5-0 after the first inning. But the Dragons answered with five runs of their own, as the C’s defense committed four errors in the second inning. The C’s opened the gap to three runs on a RBI-double by Corinne Wengi and a run-scoring Fielder’s Choice by Cellar in the bottom half of the inning. A RBI-double by Charissa Rajnoch and a RBI-single by Picot tied the game again in the fourth inning. But the Challengers had one more big inning left, as they used four hits for another four runs in the fifth inning to seal the deal.
The C’s remain in first place with a 4-0 record. They will travel to Hünenberg on Sunday, May 4 to face the Unicorns.
Challengers face Cardinals

The 1.Liga-Team travels to Lausanne on Sunday, April 27 to play its first round game of this year’s Swiss Cup against the Geneva Dragons. The game starts at 2pm at the Terrain de Chavannes.
1.Liga-Team defeated twice
The 1.Liga-Team wasn’t able to confirm the good performances it showed one week ago, as the season started with two wins on opening day. The C’s lost twice on Sunday, April 20 at Romanshorn against the Romanshorn Submarines and the Wil Devils. The Challengers have now a 2-2 record.

Am Samstag, den 19.04.2008, traten wir zum zweiten Mal gegen die Flyers aus Therwil an. Um 13.30 Uhr starteten wir das Game in der Defense. Entgegen unserer Tradition, das erste Inning unkonzentriert zu spielen und dadurch unseren Gegnern einen Vorsprung zu ermöglichen, liessen wir lediglich einen Run zu. Wir scorten zwar keinen Run im ersten Inning, im Zweiten dagegen derer fünf. Als erstes schlug Simone Zurschmitten einen Triple, bald gefolgt von einem weiteren Stand-Up-Triple von Isabella Yaheya und einem Double von Alexia Zingg. Der Punktestand betrug nun 5-1 für die Challengers. Im dritten Inning scorten beide Teams je einen Run, im vierten Inning machten die Therwilerinnen 2 Runs und wir keinen. Im fünften Inning bauten wir unseren Vorsprung mit zwei Runs auf 8-4 aus. Ein Run davon scorte Simone Zurschmitten mit ihrem ersten in-the-Park-Homerun ihrer Softballkarriere. Im sechsten Inning war unser atBat von hoher Qualität und trotz zwei weiteren Runs der Flyers lagen wir nun dank 4 Runs auf unserer Seite mit 12-6 deutlich in Führung. Nun galt es noch drei schnelle Outs zu machen, um dieses Spiel zu gewinnen. Im siebten Inning liess unsere Konzentration nach. Unnötige Errors und Plays führten dazu, dass die Flyers auf 12-10 aufholten. Beim letzten atBat der Therwilerinnen rettete Alexia Zingg mit einem Catch eines Linedrives auf Shortstop unseren Kopf, und das Spiel war gewonnen!
In der Offense schlugen wir insgesamt 16 Hits, die Flyers 15. Alexia Zingg battete 2 RBI’s und zwei Hits. Karin Mittelstädt schlug ebenfalls zwei Hits, Leandra Simitovic einen. Ziegylou Wehrli hatte 3 Hits und zwei RBI’s, Simona Cellar schlug einen Hit, Corinne Wengi 2 Hits und einen RBI. Sandrine Montandon vollbrachte eine sehr gute Leistung nach einer längeren Pause mit 2 RBI’s und einem Hit. Isabella Yaheya schlug 2 Hits und 2 RBI’s. Ein grosses Dankeschön geht an Brigit Zuber, Sandrine Keck, Elisabete Vieira und Catrin Grossmann für ihre Unterstützung auf der Bench.
In der Defense machten wir ingsesamt dreimal ein Doubleplay. Im dritten Inning catchte Corinne Wengi im Leftfield einen Flyball und dank ihrem direkten präzisen Wurf auf Home taggte Catcherin Simona Cellar eine Runnerin vor der Homeplate. Im vierten Inning catchte Ziegylou Wehrli auf 2nd Base einen Flyball und dank einem Spielzug über Home auf 3rd Base ging ebenfalls eine Therwilerin out. Im sechsten Inning catchte Pitcherin Leandra Simitovic einen Flyball und mit anschliessendem Step auf 1st Base gelang ihr unser drittes Doubleplay. Isabella Yaheya machte im Rightfield 2 Flyouts, Sandrine Montandon im Centerfield catchte einen Flyball. Ebenso zu erwähnen ist Alexia Zinggs Leistung auf Shortstop (2 gecatchte Linedrives, jeweils als drittes Out).
Unsere Pitcherin Leandra Simitovic vollbrachte eine super Leistung mit lediglich 2 Walks! Damit kann sie erneut einen Win verbuchen.
Bobbie-Jean Taylor, unsere Star-Spielerin der Saisons 2005 und 2006, welche zur Zeit auf Besuch in der Schweiz ist, machte den First Pitch dieses Spiels! Schön dich für kurze Zeit wieder hier zu haben, Bobbie-Jean!!!
Zusammenfassend war dieses Spiel qualitativ äussert gut! Wir müssen jedoch weiterhin unsere Fehler in der Defense ausmerzen und unser Batting noch stärker machen! Also heisst es weiterhin hart trainieren.
Mit diesem zweiten Sieg gegen die Flyers stehen wir auf dem ersten Platz der Tabelle. Nächsten Samstag werden wir auf der Klopstockwiese auf die Dragons aus Genf treffen.
