Challengers surrender after three hours, lose 14-5

After a good start, the season turned out bad for Challengers ace Thomas Landis. He was handed a career-worst fifth loss in a row by the Therwil Flyers last weekend and hasn't won a championship game since May 16's 11-2 win against the Zürich Barracudas.

Landis tossed a decent game, but lacked the backup of his defense, committing a season-high six errors that led to a total of five unearned runs.

The key inning was the second, when the Challengers gave their opponents the opportunity to grab the lead with two consecutive errors by Harry Bregy and Oliver Labhart. The Flyers took advantage and scored four runs on consecutive singles and a fielder's choice.

Labhart had a two-out, two-RBI-single in the first inning to provide his team with the lead.

For four innings, the Challengers trailed this two-run margin. Bregy scored on an error in the bottom of the second and again the fourth inning on Nick Lehmann's ground out. But each time the Flyers re-established their lead.

Reto Siegel of the Flyers had a team-high three hits.

After the Flyers switched catchers in the fifth, the Challengers managed to occupy first and third with Adrian Kämpfer">Adrian Kämpfer and Chris Palatinus with one out, but none of them was able to score as the next two batters were retired by Stefan Koller.

After this opportunity, the home team fell apart in the heat of the day. Only two more baserunners reached, while the defense gave up nine more runs on another four errors in the final two innings.
