Landis shuts out Eagles

In his 112th start in the NLA, Thomas Landis finally registered his first shutout of his career.

Thomas Landis tossed his first career shutout in a 9-0 win against the Eagles.
Thomas Landis tossed his first career shutout in a 9-0 win against the Eagles.
He did it in a 9-0 win in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Reussbühl Eagles.

His performance was backed by nine hits by his offense, three of those hits coming off rookie Thomas Blank's bat.

He collected a career-high three hits, including an RBI-double in the fifth inning.

The Challengers started early and put three runs on the board in the first inning on Tobias Siegrist's RBI-single and Nick Lehmann's two-run single with two outs.

Jerome Müller's knuckle ball posed no problems to the Challengers' batters today, as they went on to score four more in the fourth inning.

A two-run single by Landis capped the inning which put a definitive end to the Eagles' hopes of winning the game.

Two more Challenger runners crossed the plate in the fifth inning on Blank's double and Patrick Zöllig's run-scoring ground out.

The Eagles tried hard to break Landis' bid for his first shutout, but to no avail.

It got close, though, as the Eagles put runners on third and second with two outs in the final frame.

But in that situation, catcher Siegrist did what he does best: throwing out runners on the basepaths. He unleashed a surprising throw to third baseman Ramon Perez who snared the ball and tagged out Müller for the final out of the game.

Landis gave up only four hits and two walks all day while also striking out 10, giving him a Game Score of 77.

That number is the fifth highest in Challengers history.

Game notes
With that win, Landis also snapped his career-high 5-game losing streak, getting his first win since May 16 against the Zürich Barracudas. ... Anubis Benitez now has 115 walks and 115 strikeouts in his seven NLA-seasons with the Challengers.
