NLB walk off with sweep
The NLB-Team swept the Jona Bandits on Saturday, October 6 at the Heerenschürli ballpark. In both games the Challengers trailed after 5 1/2 innings but turned them around with late rallies. In game 1 the C’s batted through the order in the bottom of the sixth to eventually win it 13-10. Game 2 provided two defensively solid teams that kept the errors low. The Challengers got in front 3-0 but missed a lot of chances to increase the score as they loaded the bases in three innings without harvesting a single run. Meanwhile, the Bandits scored five times and it wasn’t until the seventh inning that the Challengers were able to answer with a two-out, two-RBI, game-tying single by Adderly Sarmiento that sent the game to extras. After a 1-2-3 inning in defense, Adrian Kämpfer ended the game with a walk-off-double to the center field wall that plated Carlos Nepomuceno for a 6-5 win. Wascar de Leon recorded both wins with a fine performance of relief pitching, notable hits provided Dean Scherbaum with a triple and Nicolas Motte with an RBI-single in in game 2 while Daiki Sato had a pair of RBI-singles and Ryan Koley collected both his fist career hit and RBI in game 1.
The C’s remain in fifth place with a 9-11 record and will host the Sissach Frogs on Sunday, October 21 at the Heerenschürli ballpark for the last Challengers games of the 2012 season.

Challengers season ends in Semis
The Challengers lost twice on Sunday, September 30 at Bern, as the reigning Swiss Champion Bern Cardinals swept the C’s in their best-of-five Semifinal Series. The two losses bring the Challengers season to an end after reaching the Playoffs for the 14th time in the last 16 years.
The Cardinals edged the Challengers 5-3 in Game 2 and added a 10-5 victory in Game 3 of the series. The Cardinals won a Playoff Series against the C’s for the sixth time in a row. The last time the Challengeres eliminated the Cardinals was in the Semifinal Series in 2000.
Rainout. What else?
Game 2 of the best-of-five semi-final series between the Challengers and the Bern Cardinals has been rained out on Saturday, September 29. So far only one of the three scheduled games has been played.
The Challengers and the Cardinals will now play a double header on Sunday. The Swiss Baseball and Softball Federation rescheduled the game for Sunday, September 30 at noon at Bern Allmend. Game 3 will be played right after Game 2.
Games 2 and 3 in Bern
The Challengers will travel to Bern twice this weekend to play the games 2 and 3 of their best-of-five semi-final series against the reigning champions Bern Cardinals. The Challengers dropped Game 1 of their best-of-five semi-final series to the Bern Cardinals, as the Cards posted a 6-1 win. The game took place at the Heerenschürli ballpark on Sunday, September 29 after the game on Saturday at Bern has been rained out. After the defending Swiss champion Bern Cardinals opened the score in the first inning, the Challengers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Tobias Siegrist crossed the plate with the help of the Cardinals defense. The C’s loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but weren’t able to cash in. Better did it the Cardinals in the top of the sixth frame, as they scored five runs on four hits, two sacrifice flies, two walks, one error and a wild pitch to make it 6-1. And the Cards didn’t look back, as Ryan Byrne retired 11 of the last 13 batters he faced.
Byrne went the distance, as he allowed one unearned run and four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts, while Andrea Girasole tossed 5.1 innings allowing five runs – three earned – and six hits with two walks and one strikeout. Jesus Martinez was the only Challenger with two hits, while Säntis Zeller and Thomas Blank had one hit apiece.
Game 2 of the best-of-five series will take place on Saturday, September 29 at 2pm at Bern Allmend.
