The Softball Team Zürich celebrated its first victory of the 2014 campaign, as they posted a wild 24-17 win in Game 1 on Sunday, May 18 against the Bern Cardinals. In Game 2 the Team Zürich found no receipt against Cardinals pitcher Monica Alnes, as the Cards answered with a 9-0 shutout win.

Softball Team Zürich loses opener
The Softball Team Zürich with players from the Zürich Barracudas and the Challengers played its first game ever on Sunday, May 4 at Rümlang, as they faced the Luzern Eagles. And the season opener was a roller coaster. Both teams blew a four-run lead and the crowd saw several lead changes, a grand slam and a seventh inning rally. The Eagles built a 4-0 lead, before Leandra Simitovic drove in Corina Grass for the first run for the Team Zürich in the bottom of the third inning. And a few batters later with the bases loaded Giulia Oswald belted a grand slam over the center field fence that also scored Simitovic, Ronja Weber and Simona Cellar to make it 5-4.
The Team Zürich extended its lead to four runs in the fourth, but the ladies opened the door again for the Eagles, as they committed four two-out errors in the top of the sixth, that resulted in four runs and a tied ball game. Indeed they grabed the lead again, as Oswald drove in Cellar in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles answered right away with five runs in the seventh to eventually win 13-10.
Game 2 was all Eagles, as they cruised to an easy 26-0 victory for an opening day sweep. The Team Zürich will face next the Bern Cardinals on May 18 at Bern.

The summer practice for the Zurich Challengers Softball Team starts in April and takes place every Tuesday and every Thursday from 6pm till 8pm at the Klopstockwiese in Zurich-Enge. The Klopstockwiese is right at the corner of Bederstrasse and Klopstockstrasse (Tram 5 & 13, Bus 33 to Waffenplatzstrasse).
Das Sommertraining für das Zürich Challengers Softball Team beginnt im April und findet jeden Dienstag und jeden Donnerstag von 18.00 – 20.00 Uhr auf der Klopstockwiese in Zürich Enge statt. Die Klopstockwiese befindet sich an der Ecke Bederstrasse/Klopstockstrasse (Tram 5 & 13, Bus 33 bis Waffenplatzstrasse).

The winter practice for the Zurich Challengers Softball Team will take place every Tuesday from 6.15pm till 8.15pm and every Thursday from 8.00pm till 9.30pm at the Turnhalle Rämibühl at the Rämistrasse 80 in Zurich (tram 5 & 9 to Kantonsschule). The first session after the Christmas break will take place on Tuesday, January 7.
In addition to that the pitcher/catcher practice will take place every Tuesday from 8.15pm till 9.30pm.
Das Wintertraining für das Zürich Challengers Softball Team findet jeden Dienstag von 18.15 bis 20.15 Uhr und jeden Donnerstag von 20.00 bis 21.30 Uhr in der Turnhalle Rämibühl an der Rämistr. 80 in Zürich statt (Tram 5 & 9 bis Kantonsschule). Das erste Training nach den Weihnachtsferien findet am Dienstag, 7. Januar statt.

Cellar takes home hardware

Simona Cellar won her first MVP award at the Challengers' General Assembly on December 1. Cellar set team-highs with 26 hits, 6 doubles, 1 homerun, 10 RBI's and 16 runs scored, while leading the team with a .464 batting average and a .531 on-base percentage to take away also the Best Batter award.
Karen Heimgartner was named Best Pitcher for the fourth time after 2006, 2007 and 2008, as she went 2-4 with 46 strikeouts and a 5.10 ERA in 46.1 innings pitched. She was also credited with the Best Fielder award finishing with a .975 fielding percentage, as she committed only two errors.
Anouk Lkharrazi was named Most Improved Player, while Henna Määttä earned the Rookie of the Year award, as she batted .178 with 8 hits, 6 runs and 4 RBI's.

Softball season ends in semi-finals

The Softball-Team lost twice against the Therwil Flyers on Saturday, September 14, as the Challengers' season came to an end in the semi-finals. The Flyers cruised to a 13-1 win in Game 1 and added a 2-0 victory in Game 2 to sweep the C's in the best-of-three series.
The Flyers will face the reigning champion Luzern Eagles in the finals. The Eagles eliminated the Zürich Barracudas in the other semi-final series in two games as well.
Ladies advance to playoffs
The Softball-Team finished the preeliminary round in fourth place to clinch the final playoff spot. The Challengers got the help they needed to remain in fourth place, as the Wil Devils and the Bern Cardinals split on Sunday, September 8. Either of both teams would have passed the C's in the standings with a sweep, but after the Devils won the first game of the day 20-6, the Cardinals posted a 2-0 victory in Game 2 to send the Challengers into the playoffs.
The C's will face the first-placed Therwil Flyers on Saturday, September 14 at Therwil for Game 1 and Game 2 of the best-of-three semi-final series.
Ladies split with Cardinals, remain in 4th place
The Softball-Team stays in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot till the last day of the Round Robin. But now their fate isn't in their own hands anymore. The Challengers split with the Bern Cardinals on Saturday, September 7 to defend their fourth place with a 6-14 record. The Challengers posted a 6-3 win in Game 1, but failed to add another victory in Game 2 to clinch the playoff spot, as the C's were shut down 4-0 by the Cardinals. The Cards will face the Wil Devils on Sunday, September 8 for the last games of the Round Robin.

The Softball-Team is still tied for fourth place after a split with Wil Devils on Saturday, August 31 at the Klopstockwiese, what keeps the Challengers in the race for the last playoff spot. The Devils took a 4-0 lead in Game 1 and never looked back, as they posted a 5-2 victory. And the Devils also jumped off to a good start in Game 2, as they built an early 3-0 lead. But the C's settled down after committing several errors in the first frame and erased the deficit to eventually win 4-3.
The Challengers will face the Bern Cardinals on Saturday, September 7 at Bern. With a sweep the C's could clinch the playoff berth.
