Softball season ends in disappointment, Flyers move into Finals

The first placed Therwil Flyers swept the Challengers in their best-of-three semi-final series, as the Flyers posted a 1-0 win in Game 2. The crowd saw a pitcher’s duel between Brittany Franklin and Brittany Howell, who both took control of the batters, as both teams exchanged zeros on the scoreboard till the bottom of the sixth inning. Unfortunately for the C’s Nina Wolfensberger was called safe on first base after hitting a foul ball and the Flyers managed to move her on to third base, before Melanie Wanner hit a RBI-single with two outs to score the deciding run. The C’s had one last chance in the top of the seventh frame, but Franklin retired the side in order.
The Challengers’ season ended in dispiriting fashion, as the C’s didn’t manage to score against the strong Flyers’ defense, despite playing a quality game. The Flyers will face the reigning champion Luzern Eagles in the finals, while the Challengers finish the season in fourth place.

Flyers win opener, take 1-0 lead

The Softball-Team lost the opener of its best-of-three semi-final series 7-0 against the Therwil Flyers on Saturday, September 10 at the Klopstockwiese. The game was decided in the third and fourth frames, as the Challengers had a bases loaded situation with zero outs, but didn’t manage to score after a controversial call by the umpires, while the Flyers added three runs in the fourth after another controversial safe call to make it 6-0 instead of 4-1 to put things out of reach. The C’s had no success at the plate, as Sophie Zihlmann allowed only two hits and four walks, while Leandra Simitovic gave up seven runs – five earned – and eleven hits with two walks while striking out four. The Challengers have to win twice on Sunday at Therwil to avoid the end of the season.
