C’s reach .500 mark, sweep Cards
The Challengers evened their record at 7-7, as they swept the Bern Cardinals on Saturday, July 12 at the Heerenschürli ballpark led by two strong starting pitchers. Ryan Byrne lifted the C's to an 8-1 win in Game 1, as he allowed only one unearned run and four hits with four walks while striking out 18 batters, what is also the second best mark in Challengers history, just behind Robert Sedin's 20 K's performance on June 27 in 2013 against the Zürich Lions.
The Challengers opened the score in the bottom of the first frame, as the first three batters delivered three hits to make it 2-0. Both teams exchanged zeros for thext four frames, before the C's added three runs in the sixth and the seventh innings each to put things out of reach. Sedin went 3-for-4 with two doubles and Byrne had three hits, while James Sanders had two hits.
Robert Sedin carried a perfect game into the sixth frame, as he led the C's to a 10-0 shutout win over the Cardinals in Game 2. He ended up tossing seven innings of two-hit ball. The Challengers broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth frame, as an overthrow by the Cardinals pitcher to first base with the bases loaded and two outs enabled them to score three runs to make it 4-0 before the Cards added another couple of errors. The C's, who are riding a three game winning streak, remain in fifth place, but cut the deficit to the fourth placed Cardinals to 0.5 games.
