The Zurich Barracudas won the third local derby of the season on Tuesday, July 5 at the Heerenschürli ballpark. The C’s erased a three-run deficit in the fourth frame and came within one run again, as they made it 6-7 in the sixth inning, but the Barracudas held on for a 12-7 victory to improve their record to 8-10. The Challengers are still in fourth place with a 9-11 record.

Stadtderby am Dienstag Abend
Am Dienstag, 5. Juli treffen im Baseballstadion Heerenschürli die Challengers und die Zürich Barracudas zum dritten Stadtderby der Saison aufeinander. In den bisherigen zwei Duellen gewannen beide Teams je einmal. Sowohl die Challengers als auch die Barracudas kämpfen nach wie vor um den vierten Platz und somit um die Qualifikation für die Playoffs. Spielbeginn ist um 19.00 Uhr.

The Challengers extended the Therwil Flyers’ losing streak to two games by edging them 4-3 in 10 innings in Game 1. Tobias Siegrist went all ten innings and improved to 5-3 on the season. Chris Palatinus led the offense with three hits, while Stefan Koller suffered his first loss of the season by giving up Thomas Blank’s game-winning sacrifice fly in the top of the tenth.
In Game 2, Saentis Zeller erased the Flyers’ 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the fifth inning, and Palatinus held the Flyers in check until the seventh and final inning. But a wild throw by shortstop Yanik Probst enabled the tying run to score, sending that game into extra innings, as well. In the eighth inning with two outs, Reto Siegel lined a single to center field to seal the Flyer’s 4-3 win.
Probst, Siegrist und Zeller im Baseball EM-Kader
Die Challengers Spieler Yanik Probst, Tobias Siegrist und Säntis Zeller gehören dem 24-köpfigen Kader des Schweizer Nationalteams für die diesjährige Baseball Qualifier EM an, welche vom 25. bis 30. Juli in Barcelona stattfindet. Die Schweiz trifft dabei auf Finnland, Irland, Spanien und Ungarn.

Revanche der Challengers
Die Challengers gewannen das zweite Night Game innert Wochenfrist gegen die Zürich Barracudas am Dienstag, 21. Juni mit 7-5 und nahmen damit erfolgreich Revanche für die 1-14 Niederlage vom vergangenen Mittwoch.
Die Challengers starteten furios und gingen gleich im ersten Inning mit 3-0 in Führung. Im siebten Durchgang fiel dann die vermeintliche Vorentscheidung, als die Challengers auf 7-1 davonzogen. Die Barracudas jedoch steckten nicht auf und verkürzten umgehend auf 5-7, den Ausgleich liess die Defense der Challengers jedoch nicht mehr zu.
Tobias Siegrist pitchte sechs starke Innings für seinen vierten Win der Saison, während Chris Palatinus den Sieg nach Hause brachte und seinen zweiten Save erzielte. Die Challengers liegen nun mit acht Siegen und neun Niederlagen an vierter Stelle.
Night Game am Mittwoch
Die Challengers verloren die Mittwochabend Partie gegen die Zürich Barracudas diskussionslos mit 14-1. Nach sechs Innings war das Spiel noch ausgeglichen, aber in den letzten drei Innings punkteten die Cudas gleich 10 mal. Tobias Siegrist kassierte den Loss indem er sechs Runs in sieben Innings abgab. Cody Hightower von den Barracudas schlug einen 2-Run Triple, kassierte drei Walks und punktete gleich vier mal. Chris Palatinus erzielte den einzigen Run für die Challengers als er im vierten Inning auf Siegrist’ RBI-double nach Hause kam.

Challengers split with Frogs again
The Zürich Challengers and the Sissach Frogs split again on Saturday, June 4 at the Heerenschürli ballpark. And again the C’s took Game 1, as they held on for a 6-4 victory over the Frogs.
Tobias Siegrist recorded his third win of the season, as he allowed four runs and six hits with four walks and five strikeouts in seven strong innings, while Thomas Burger earned his first save of the year. Carlos Pena reached base four times and scored twice, while Säntis Zeller delivered a triple.
Already one week ago the Frogs fought back in Game 2. This time they broke open a 2-2 tie with a five-run fifth inning for a 7-2 win. The C’s bats weren’t on fire, as the offense combined for only six hits. The C’s remain in fifth place with a 7-8 record.

The Challengers split with the Sissach Frogs on Sunday, May 29 at Sissach. After the C’s posted a 14-4 victory in Game 1 over the Frogs, the Frogs answered right away with a 9-2 win in Game 2. The C’s remain in fifth place with a 6-7 record and 1 game behind a playoff spot.

The Challengers split with the Embrach Mustangs on Saturday, May 14 at Embrach. After losing Game 1 4-9, the Challengers took Game 2, as they posted a 8-4 victory over the Mustangs. The Challengers have now a 5-6 record.

The Challengers improved their record to 4-5 after winning twice against the Zürich Lions on Saturday, May 7 at the Heerenschürli.
The Challengers offense exploded for ten runs in the top of the eight inning, as the C’s posted a 18-7 win over the Lions in Game 1. The C’s built a five-run lead, but the Lions tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the fifth frame. Kurt Kovac had three hits and five RBI’s and Carlos Pena added four hits for the Challengers, while Thomas Burger pitched four innings of relief, allowing two hits and one run for his first win of the season.
Thomas Blank, Carlos Peña and Adrian Kämpfer turned a crucial double-play with the tying run on third base in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Challengers edged the Lions 2-1 in Game 2. Jesus Martinez and Adrian Kämpfer had one RBI each, while Patrick Maier and Chris Palatinus combined for a two-hitter. Maier was credited with the win, as he allowed one run on one hit and six walks, while also striking out eight. Palatinus pitched the final 2.2 innings for his first save of the season.
