Die zweite Mannschaft der Challengers bestritt am Sonntag, 25. April ihr erstes NLB-Spiel seit der Saison 2007. Dabei trafen sie in Bern gegen die Cardinals auf einen Mitaufsteiger aus der 1.Liga. Das Team aus der Bundeshauptstadt setzte sich dabei mit 11-6 und 8-7 zweimal knapp gegen die Challengers durch.

Challengers start into Preseason
The Challengers Baseball-Team had a successful start into the preseason at the Embrach spring tournament on Saturday, March 27. The C’s posted a 4-2 victory over their cross-town rivals Zurich Barracudas before they drew a 4-4 tie with the Sissach Frogs in Game 2.
On Sunday, March 28 the Challengers played a split-squad game at Therwil against the Flyers. The reigning Swiss Champion posted a 8-6 win over the C’s on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of both organizations. Finally the Flyers and Challengers Softball-Teams played a friendly game, as the Flyers beat the C’s, taking a 22-4 victory.
Staub fällt lange aus
Challengers Catcher und U18 Nationalspieler Gabe Staub zog sich bei einem Sturz auf einer Eisplatte in der Nähe seines Wohnorts am Mittwoch einen Schien- und Wadenbeinbruch zu. Staub wurde bereits erfolgreich operiert. Zur Stabilisierung des rechten Schien- und Wadenbeins setzten ihm die Aerzte eine Titanplatte ein. Der 15-jährige wird wohl den grssten Teil der Saison 2010 ausfallen.

The winter practice for the Zurich Challengers NLB-Team takes place every TUESDAY from 8pm till 10pm at the Turnhalle Probstei at the Stettbachstr. 88 in Zurich-Schwamendingen (tram 7 to Roswiesen), every WEDNESDAY from 6.15pm till 8pm and every THURSDAY from 6.15pm till 9.40pm at the Turnhalle Rämibüel at the Rämistrasse 80 right across the Zurich University (Tram 5 & 9 to Kantonsschule).
Das Wintertraining für das NLB-Team der Zürich Challengers findet jeden DIENSTAG von 20.00-22.00 Uhr in der Turnhalle Probstei an der Stettbachstr. 88 in Zürich-Schwamendingen statt (Tram 7 bis Haltestelle Roswiesen) sowie jeden MITTWOCH von 18.15-20.00 Uhr und jeden DONNERSTAG von 18.15-21.40 Uhr in der Turnhalle Rämibüel an der Rämistrasse 80 vis-à-vis der Uni Zürich.

Das Wintertraining fuer das 1.Liga-Team der Zuerich Challengers findet jeden DIENSTAG von 20.00-22.00 Uhr in der Turnhalle Probstei an der Stettbachstr. 88 in Zuerich-Schwamendingen statt (Tram 7 bis Haltestelle Roswiesen).
1.Liga-Team beendet Saison auf Rang 3
Das 1.Liga-Team gewann auch das zweite Spiel der best-of-three Serie um den dritten Platz gegen die Zürich Barracudas. Nach einem 20-5 Erfolg im ersten Spiel vor zwei Wochen, liessen die Challengers am Samstag, 19. September in Embrach einen 21-12 Sieg gegen den Stadtrivalen folgen. Damit beenden die Challengers eine starke Saison auf dem dritten Schlussrang und steigen damit in die NLB auf. Die Challengers gewannen die Vorrunde in der Ostgruppe mit elf Siegen aus zwoelf Partien, schieden dann aber im Halbfinale mit 1-2 gegen die Thun Hunters aus. Insgesamt gewann das Team von Headcoach Kurt Kovac 2009 14 seiner 17 Spiele.

The NLB-Team showed a strong performance on Sunday against the Hünenberg Unicorns but was unrewarded, as the C’s lost twice after 7 and a half hours of marathon-baseball at the Heerenschürli. The Challengers erased a four run deficit in Game 1 to eventually lose it in the eight inning after a five minute break due to an injury, as the Unicorns scored three times to make it 7-5. The C’s cut the deficit to one run in the ninth but left the tying run stranded at second. In Game 2 the two teams combined for 23 runs in the first three innings, before exchanging zeros on the scoreboard in all but three half-innings for the rest of the game. Nick Lehmann belted a grand slam and drove in seven runs, Daniele Carrozza had three hits and Alex Keating and Jan Stuchlik had a double each, as the C’s lost 11-17.
