Challengers lose Finals

Finals: The Challengers couldn’t make the sensation happen, losing 14-4 in the Finals of the European Cup against the Mladost Skorpions. The Challengers were outhit 13-9, with Karen Heimgartner and Simone Zurschmitten having two hits each. In the end, Karen was named Best Pitcher of the tournament, and Lindsay Marshall received the trophy for Best Batter. Day 5: The Challengers will play in the title game on Saturday after beating the Mladost Skopions 4-0. Karen Heimgartner pitched another gem as she gave up only four hits, no walks, and struck out eight. Andrea Wirth had the game-winning RBI in the fourth inning, and two singles and two errors scored all the runs the Challengers need. The Grand Final will be played on Saturday at 3pm against Evriali Glyfadas.
Earlier in the day, the Challengers advanced to the Semifinals by winning all their games. In the final game, they beat the Skorpions 15-2 on Irene Bühler’s 4-hitter, allowing only 2 unearned runs and one walk, also striking out nine. The Challengers scored 11 times in the third inning to blow the game wide open. Ziegylou Wherli went 3-for-4 with four RBI’s, including a 3-run double, and Lindsay Marshall went 2-for-4 with a 3-run double in the third. Day 4: It seems as if nobody can beat the Challengers as they won their seventh game in a row. They beat Athletic Sofia 13-6 as Leandra Simitovic combined with Irene Bühler on a 6-hitter. The Challengers scored 11 times on eight hits in the first inning. Simitovic had a triple, Lindsay Marshall an RBI-triple and Alexia Zingg a bases-clearing double. Four players had at least two hits as the team improved to 7-0. Day 3: The Challengers are still undefeated after six games, mainly thanks to Karen Heimgartner’s stellar pitching performance. In Game 6, her 3-hit shutout of Evriali Glyfadas from Greece in a 7-0 rout put the Challengers at 6-0 and in first place in the standings. She struck out nine and walked only three, while Irene Buehler had a two-run double in the first and a triple in the third inning. Leandra Simitovic was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and Heimgartner hit an RBI-double in the 5th to help her own cause.
In the first game of the day, the Challengers have defeated the Odense Giants 6-0 for a second time to improve their record at the European Cup to 5-0. Karen Heimgartner pitched a no-hitter with 13 K’s and just one base-on-balls. Heimgartner’s performance on the hill was backed up by Lindsay Marshall’s 3-for-3 performance, including 3 RBI’s. Day 2: The Challengers started into the European Cup in Dupnitsa, Bulgaria with a perfect 4-0 record. With wins against all four other teams, the Challengers have propelled themselves into the role of early favorites to win it all. Their latest triumph came against Athletic Sofia, whom they beat 12-4 behind Irene Buehler’s 12-4 complete game win, in which she allowed only three earned runs on seven hits and one walk, while also striking out four. Simona Cellar went 4-for-4, including a triple and a grand-slam homer to collect a total of six RBI’s. It was the first homer ever in the new built Levski complex at Dupnitsa. Charissa Rajnoch added a 3-run double, and Alexia Zingg hit an RBI-triple.
In Game 3 earlier in the day, they beat the Odense Giants 16-6. Leandra Simitovic pitched a complete game, allowing six runs – only two of them earned – on seven hits and two walks, while also striking out five. Simone Zurschmitten went 3-for-4, including a double and four RBI’s, Flavia Von Meiss also added three hits and four RBI’s in five at-bats, and Simona Cellar hit an RBI-triple. Corinne Wengi is listed as day-to-day after getting a deep cut in her left knee after a collision with the catcher in Game 1 on Monday against the Mladost Scorpions.
Day 1: The Challengers have won their first two games at the European Cup in Bulgaria. They won the opener 4-0 against Mladost Scorpions behind Karen Heimgartner’s 4-hit shutout. Ziegylou Wehrli put the Challengers on the board in the 3rd inning on an error, and Lindsay Marshall’s 2-run triple scored Andrea Wirth and Flavia Von Meiss.
In the following game against the Evriali Glyfadas from Greece, Heimgartner combined with Leandra Simitovic on a 1-hitter in a 5-2 victory. Simone Zurschmitten hit an RBI-single in the first inning, and Marshall had a 2-run triple in the second. She later added a double and a single, and collected three RBI’s. Ladies split with Flyers

The Softball-Team finished the Final Round with a 6-6 record after a split with the defending champion Therwil Flyers on Sunday, August 24 at Therwil. The Challengers had a veritable false start, as the Flyers delivered six hits and scored seven runs in the first inning. For the rest of the game both pitchers, Sophie Zihlmann for the Flyers and Leandra Simitovic for the C’s, kept the opponent’s bats quiet. Simitovic tossed a complete game and allowed eight runs – six earned – and nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts, as the Flyers held on for a 8-1 victory over the Challengers. Both teams exchanged zeros on the scoreboard through the first five innings in Game 2. Then Ziegylou Wehrli opened the sixth with a single and Leandra Simitovic reached first on an error, while Flavia Von Meiss plated both runners with a 2-run single and scored the third run for the C’s on a RBI-double by Karen Heimgartner. That was all the Challengers needed, as Heimgartner tossed a four-hit shutout with three walks and fifteen strikeouts for her fourth win of the season, as the Challengers posted a 3-0 triumph over the Flyers in Game 2. The two teams will meet again in a best-of-three Semifinal Series, but not before they participate at the European Cup tournaments from September 1 till 6. The Flyers will travel to Prague, while the Challengers will play in Dupniza, Bulgaria.

The Softball-Team stopped its six-game losing streak, as the Challengers won twice on Saturday, August 16 at the Klopstockwiese against the fourth-ranked Reussbühl Eagles. After the C’s were shut down twice by the Wil Devils a week ago, their bats were on fire this time. Karen Heimgartner was 3-for-3 with two doubles and Karin Mittelstädt, Corinne Wengi and Andrea Wirth had two hits apiece and the C’s offense errupted for 12 runs and 13 hits, while Leandra Simitovic tossed a four-hitter with three walks and two strikeouts, as the Challengers posted a 12-5 victory in Game 1. The C’s used three different pitchers and held on for a 14-9 win over the Eagles in Game 2. It was for the first time that the Challengers didn’t manage to get on the scoreboard in a double-header. Eagles rally again in last inning

The Challengers Softball Team lost its fourth game in a row on Sunday, August 3 at Reussbühl. Things started well for the blue and red, as they built a 6-1 lead after the first inning. But the C’s stranded eleven baserunners before blowing a five-run lead, as the Eagles rallied for seven runs in the last frame en route to a 12-10 victory over the Challengers to clinch a playoff berth. Five Challengers players reached base three times, but only Flavia Von Meiss and Corinne Wengi scored twice, while Karin Mittelstädt and Elisabete Vieira batted in two runs apiece. Leandra Simitovic pitched five strong innings before tiring in the sixth, as she allowed twelve runs – only six earned – and six hits with eight walks and six strikeouts. The game has been rescheduled after the officials were forced to abandon play on July 12 due to heavy rain, as the Challengers led 11-2 after four innings. The Challengers finished the preeliminary round in third place with a 9-5 record. The C’s will look to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat when they start into the final round on Sunday, August 10 playing a double-header against the Wil Devils (11-3). Eagles, Rain stop Softball Team

The Softball-Team lost its third game in a row on Saturday, July 12 at Reussbühl. The Challengers erased a five-run deficit in the last two innings before a 40-minute rain delay, that occured in the middle of the Challengers’ five-run sixth inning, stopped the threat and the C’s blew a three-run lead in the bottom half of the inning after play was resumed to eventually lose 14-15 against the strong Reussbühl Eagles. Karen Heimgartner and Leandra Simitovic had two hits and scored two runs each, while Karin Mittelstädt scored three runs and Sandrine Montandon reached base four times and crossed the plate twice for the Challengers. But things got even worse for the blue and red in Game 2. The C’s built a 11-2 lead, as Corinne Wengi opened the score with a two-run double and Alexia Zingg and Ziegylou Wehrli had two hits apiece, while Karen Heimgartner allowed a pair of unearned runs and two hits with ten strikeouts, as the umpires had to call the game after four innings – just six outs before it would have been an official game – due to heavy and constant rain. According the official rules the game has to be replayed from the beginning. The game is rescheduled for Sunday, August 3 at Reussbühl.

C’s drop pitcher’s duel, swept by Cards

The Softball-Team lost twice to the Bern Cardinals on Saturday, July 5 at the Klopstockwiese droping their record to 9-3 and losing first place to the Therwil Flyers and the Wil Devils. In Game 1, the Challengers’ worst performance of the season, the defense committed eight errors that led to eight unearned runs, while Cardinals starter Pamela Kellenberger kept the offense quiet allowing only six hits and two walks, as the C’s lost 6-13. Things started well for the C’s. After loading the bases in the first inning, Simona Cellar drove in Alexia Zingg, while Karin Mittelstädt and Karen Heimgartner scored on a passed ball and an error to make it 3-1. But from there it was all Cardinals. They scored five runs on four hits and two errors by the Challengers’ defense in the second and added three more runs in the third on two hits and four errors to make it 9-3. Kellenberger retired nine of eleven batters she faced from the first to the fourth inning, before giving up a walk to Sandrine Montandon and a single to Flavia Von Meiss. The Challengers came back into the game, as Alexia Zingg delivered a two-run single and Leandra Simitovic added a RBI-double to cut the deficit to three runs. But the Cards were on fire. After a lead-off double by Cornelia Noti and a triple by Fränzi Corradi, the Challengers committed another two costly errors, allowing the Cards to score another four runs to make it 13-6. Leandra Simitovic (7-2) allowed thirteen runs – only five earned – and eleven hits with one walk and two strikeouts, while Karin Mittelstädt and Simitovic had two hits apiece for the Challengers.
Game 2 saw a pitcher’s duel between Nathalie Brown for the Cards and Karen Heimgartner for the Challengers with an unfortunate finish for the blue and red. The Challengers erased a two-run deficit in the fourth but missed to score the game-winning run in the fourth and seventh frame to eventually lose 3-7 after extra innings. The Cards opened the score, as Ashley Cline scored twice in the first and third innings to make it 2-0. But the Challengers fought back. Simona Cellar delivered a RBI-double to cut the deficit to one run. And after Corinne Wengi drew a walk to load the bases, Ziegylou Wehrli tied the game with a RBI-single. But the Cards’ defense ended the threat, as they nailed Simone Zurschmitten between third and home, trying to score the leading run. The Challengers again stranded runners on second and third in the sixth frame. And they had some bad luck as well in the seventh, as Alexia Zingg’s linedrive dropped an inch outside the right foulline in deep right field for what would have been a triple. The two teams had to play a tie-breaking extra-inning and the Cards saved the best for last. They scored five runs in the eight on four hits to put things out of reach for the Challengers. Karin Mittelstädt added one more run for the C’s on a sac fly by Simitovic in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-7 for the final score. Nathalie Brown pitched eight strong innings for the Cards, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out sixteen, while Heimgartner ended up with the loss going the distance, giving up seven runs – three earned – on six hits while striking out fourteen. Heimgartner also led the offense with two hits and reaching base four times.
The C’s will face the Reussbühl Eagles on Saturday July, 12 at Reussbühl for their last games of the preeliminary round.
