The newly founded second Softball-Team SG Eagles/Challengers faced the Zurich Barracudas on Sunday, April 29. And it was all Barracudas in Game 1, as the SG EAG/CHA didn’t escape the first inning and the Barracudas scored eleven runs and rolled to a 17-2 victory. Valentina Verdesca drove in a run in her very first career game.
The SG EAG/CHA had a better start in Game 2, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Barracudas offense exploded for 17 hits en route to a 17-6 win. Izumi Nitta had two hits and scored a pair of runs, while Isabel Schmid delivered a single and Sandrine Montandon had a RBI-single and scored a run.

SG Eagles/Challengers loses home opener
Simitovic, Heimgartner, C’s blank Eagles
The Softball-Team was nearly perfect on Opening day, as the Challengers won twice against the reigning Swiss champion Luzern Eagles on Saturday, April 28. Leadoff batter Brigit Zuber opened the score in the bottom of the first inning and the Challengers never looked back, as they increased the score to eventually win 7-0 in Game 1, as Nadja Critelli drove in the winning run in the bottom of the fifth. Leandra Simitovic tossed five magnificient innings, as she allowed one hit and two walks while also striking out four. Andrea Wirth delivered a RBI-double, while Brigit Zuber and Taylor Mc Cants scored two runs apiece.
And the C’s repeated their success in Game 2, as they posted a 7-0 victory again. The Challengers took an early 2-0 lead and added two more in the third, before Sandrine Montandon crossed the plate to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning in her first game for the Challengers since June 2010 to highlight her comeback. Leandra Simitovic and Alexia Zingg scored a pair of runs each, while Karen Heimgartner gave up only one hit and struck out ten, as she recorded her 25th win in a Challengers uniform.
The Challengers will travel to Wil on Sunday, May 6 to face the Wil Devils.
C’s lose twice in Sedin’s debut
The Challengers lost twice on Saturday, April 28 at Therwil against last year’s finalist Therwil Flyers to fall to 0-4. As in the first two games of the season the C’s were playing solid defense again, but couldn’t cash in with runners in scoring position. Starter Andrea Girasole gave up six runs and six hits with eight walks and five strikeouts, as the Flyers posted a 6-3 victory in Game 1. American Rob Sedin had a hit, a stolen base and scored a run in his debut for the Challengers.
The Flyers pitchers kept the Challengers’ bats silent in Game 2 again, as the Flyers held on for a 5-3 win. The C’s will travel to Wil on Saturday, May 5, where they will face the Devils.
Challengers with full workload
The Baseball-Teams will both travel to Therwil the upcoming weekend. The NLA-Team will face last year’s finalist Therwil Flyers on Saturday, April 28. The games start at 11am and 2pm at Therwil Känelmatt.
A day later the NLB-Team will open its season also against the Flyers, with the games starting at 11am and 2pm at Therwil Känelmatt as well.
The Softball-Team will play its home opener on Saturday, April 28 at the Klopstockwiese. The C’s will face the reigning Swiss champion Luzern Eagles to start their campaign. The games start at 11am and 1.30pm.

New Softball-Team with remarkable start
The newly founded SG Eagles/Challengers played its first gameday on Sunday, April 22. The team with mostly young players from the Luzern Eagles and the Zurich Challengers faced last year’s finalist Therwil Flyers. Game 1 was all Flyers, as they posted an easy 21-0 shutout win. Game 2 was different, as the Flyers only managed to edge the SG Eagles/Challengers 7-6.
The SG Eagles/Challengers will face next the Zurich Barracudas on Sunday, April 29 at the Klopstockwiese. Before that the Zurich Challengers will open their campaign against the reigning Swiss champion Luzern Eagles on Saturday, April 28 at the Klopstockwiese as well.
Mustangs best Challengers
The Challengers started their campaign with two losses on Sunday, April 22 against the Embrach Mustangs. The Mustangs broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning, as they posted a 6-4 win over the C’s in Game 1. Andrea Girasole gave up five runs and six hit with four walks while striking out four in 6.1 innings of work in his debut for the Challengers.
The Challengers didn’t find the key against Mustangs starter Timothy Jones, as the Jones and the Mustangs added a 3-0 shutout win in Game 2. Jones gave up only three hits and three walks with eleven strikeouts, while Fabio Aimi had no support from his offense, as he allowed three runs and three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
The C’s will face last year’s finalist Therwil Flyers on Saturday, April 28 at Therwil.
Cadets starten siegreich
Die U15-Cadets gestalteten den Saisonstart für die Organisation erfolgreich. Die Challengers siegten am Samstag, 21. April zweimal bei den Rümlang Kobras. Das Team der Coaches Todd Tuckner und Eric Haynor eröffnete das Score im ersten Inning mit einem RBI-Single von Matt Tsukroff, der Jake Tuckner das 1-0 ermöglichte. Die Kobras glichen die Partie noch im ersten Inning wieder aus, den Challengers gelang es jedoch auch im zweiten und dritten Inning zu punkten, sodass letztlich ein 6-3 Erfolg herausschaute.
Und die Challengers legten im zweiten Spiel nach, indem sie mit dem Endresultat von 6-2 einen weiteren Sieg verbuchen konnten. Die nächsten Partien tragen die Cadets am 19. Mai in Wittenbach gegen die Wittenbach Vikings und die Black Hawks aus.
Saisonstart der Challengers
Am Wochenende nehmen auch die Challengers die Baseball- und Softballsaison 2012 in Angriff. Die Ehre des ersten Ernstkampfes für die Challengers haben die U15-Cadets, die am Samstag, 21. April in Rümlang gegen die Rümlang Kobras spielen werden. Spielbeginn ist um 11.00 und 13.30 Uhr beim Schulhaus Rümelbach.
Premiere feiert die neu gegründete Spielgemeinschaft Eagles/Challengers in der Softball-Meisterschaft. Die beiden Clubs bringen ein gemeinsames zweites Team an den Start und ermöglichen so ihren jungen Spielrinnen verstärkt durch einige bewährte Kräfte Erfahrung zu sammeln. Den ersten Auftritt hat das Team unter der Leitung von Jerome Müller sowie Leandra Simitovic und Alexia Zingg am Sonntag, 22. April bei den Therwil Flyers. Die Spiele beginnen um 11.00 und 13.30 Uhr in Therwil Känelmatt II.
Das NLA-Team der Challengers reist am Sonntag, 22. April zum Season Opener nach Embrach. Gegner ist der letztjährige Halbfinalist Embrach Mustangs. Spielbeginn ist um 11.00 und 14.00 Uhr in Embrach PZ Hard.
Challengers finish in 3rd place
The Challengers finished the 15th edition of the Zurich Spring Tournament in third place. After the C’s lost the opener of the tournament, as the Zurich Barracudas edged the C’s 7-6 after erasing a four-run deficit, the C’s evened their record with a 20-0 shutout win over the Zurich Eighters on Saturday afternoon. To reach the finals the Challengers needed a win against the Tübingen Hawks from the 2nd German Bundesliga, but they didn’t manage to score a run against the strong Hawks pitching, as the Hawks posted a 2-0 win.
And the Hawks took it all. After erasing a two-run deficit the Hawks led 3-2 before the bottom of the last inning in the final game. The Barracudas loaded the bases with two outs, but the Hawks escaped the jam unscathed to win the tournament for the fifth time.

15. Zürcher Frühlingsturnier

Das traditionelle Zürcher Frühlingsturnier wird am 31. März und 1. April 2012 zum zweiten Mal im neuen Baseballstadion Heerenschürli in Zürich-Schwamendingen ausgetragen. Neben den gemeinsam das Turnier organisierenden Zürich Barracudas und Zürich Challengers gehören auch die Tübingen Hawks aus der 2. deutschen Bundesliga wie gewohnt zum Teilnehmerfeld. Eine Premiere am Frühlingsturnier feiert das vierte Team, die Zürich Eighters.
Gespielt wird am Samstag, 31. März ab 11.00 Uhr, am Sonntag, 1. April ab 10.00 Uhr. Das Finalspiel ist auf Sonntag, 14.30 Uhr angesetzt.
