Hightower, Barracudas shut down Challengers

The Challengers lost the local derby against the Zürich Barracudas on Tuesday night, as the Barracudas clinched the playoff spot, while the C’s have been eliminated for the second time since 1996. The Barracudas opened the game with a three-run in-the-park-homer in the first frame and Kody Hightower tossed nine magnificient innings, as the Barracudas posted a 7-0 shutout victory over the C’s. Hightower went 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles and drove in four runs, while Nderim Coma selt the deal with a two-run shot over the center field wall in the fifth inning to make it 7-0. Tobias Siegrist delivered two hits for the Challengers, while Yanik Probst and Adrian Kämpfer had one hit apiece.
The Challengers will face the Luzern Eagles on Sunday, September 4 in what will be a battle for fifth place, as both teams have a 10-16 record.

NLB-Team takes two from Hunters

The NLB-Team moved over .500 after sweeping the Thun Hunters on Saturday, August 27 at the Heerenschürli ballpark. Gabe Staub, Kurt Kovac, Halvar Dil and Micha Seger delivered two hits apiece for the Challengers, as the C’s cruised to a 16-1 victory over the Hunters in Game 1. Dean Scherbaum allowed one run and four hits with three walks and one strikeout in four innings of work.
Yanik Probst belted the go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning, as the Challengers rallied for an 8-4 win over the Hunters in Game 2. After Micha Seger tied the game at 4-4, Probst went deep to make it 6-4, before Halvar Dil and Oliver Bernet added two more runs. The Challengers remain in fourth place with a 10-9 record. They will face the Jona Bandits on September 11 for their last game of the season.

Challengers bezwingen Lions

Die Challengers gewannen das wegen Regens verkürzte Night Game am Mittwoch, 24. August gegen die Zürch Lions. Die Challengers lagen bereits nach drei Innings mit 12-2 in Front und siegten letztlich mit 12-7. Yanik Probst sorgte für das offensive Highlight, als er im dritten Inning einen 3-Run Homerun aus dem Heerenschürli schlug, sein erster Homerun in der NLA. Yonimiler Martinez sorgte zudem für vier Runs.
Die Challengers verbleiben somit im Rennen um den letzten Playoffplatz. Am Dienstag, 30. August treffen sie im Baseballstadion Heerenschürli im Direktduell auf die Zürich Barracudas.

Challengers remain winless vs. Cards

The Challengers lost twice to the reigning Swiss champion Bern Cardinals on Sunday, August 21 at the Heerenschürli ballpark. The Challengers erased a five-run deficit in the fifth frame and the offense exploded for 18 hits, still it was not enough to overcome the Cards, as the team from the capital city posted a wild 12-9 victory in Game 1. Yanik Probst went 3-for-5 and Carlos Pena, Carl Conway, Tobias Siegrist, Chris Palatinus and Jesus Martinez had two hits apiece.
Game 2 was all Cardinals, as they rolled to a 19-1 win over the C’s. The Challengers dropped to seventh place with a 9-15 record, but still can clinch a playoff spot with four wins in their last for games. The C’s will face next the Zurich Lions on Wednesday, August 24 for a night game at the Heerenschürli ballpark.

NLB-Spiel abgesagt

Das NLB-Spiel zwischen den Challengers und den Jona Bandits wurde abgesagt. Die Partie wurde provisorisch auf den Sonntag, 11. September neu angesetzt. Ursprünglich hätte das Spiel am 17. Juli ausgetragen werden sollen, damals musste es jedoch wegen Regens abgesagt werden.
Die Challengers empfangen als nächstes die Thun Hunters am Samstag, 27. August im Baseballstadion Heerenschürli.
