Das bereits 9. Challengers Family & Friends Tournament fand am Sonntag, 29. Juni zum zweiten Mal auf der Klopstockwiese statt. Getreu der Tradition traten wiederum fünf Teams aus aktuellen und ehemaligen Spielern, deren Familien und Freunden an, um die begehrte Trophäe zu gewinnen. Bei herrlichen äusseren Bedingungen kämpften über 70 Challengers & Friends während fast sechs Stunden um Hits, Runs & Outs. In einem spannenden Endspiel siegte das Team Chris gegen das Team Ysa mit 12-5. Der dritte Rang ging an das Team Party vor dem Team Old School und dem Team Wallis. Der Dank geht an alle Helferinnen und Helfer sowie an alle Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer, die das Plauschturnier erneut zu einem grossen Erfolg machten.

The 1.Liga-Team won twice on Saturday, June 28 at Rapperswil-Jona to keep their playoff hopes alive. After beating the host Jona Bandits 10-8, the Challengers posted a 14-4 victory over the cross-town rivals Zürich Lions. The C’s have now a 6-4 record and are in fourth place just one game behind the first ranked Zürich Barracudas and Wil Devils.

The Softball-Team improved its record to 9-1 after showing its best performance of the season against the strong Rümlang Kobras on Sunday, June 22 at Rümlang with temperatures at 31 degrees above zero. The Challengers broke a 2-2 tie with RBI-singles by Karen Heimgartner, Simone Zurschmitten and Andrea Wirth in the fifth inning and Karin Mittelstädt had two hits and crossed the plate three times, as the Challengers held on for a 10-3 victory in Game 1. Leandra Simitovic went the distance, giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out a season high eight. Heimgartner led the C’s to a 12-3 win over the Kobras in Game 2, tossing a no-hitter with three runs – none of them earned – one walk and thirteen strikeouts and Flavia Von Meiss had two hits and drove in three runs, while Alexia Zingg, Simona Cellar, Elisabete Vieira and Simitovic scored two runs apiece and the Challengers rolled to their ninth win in ten games. The C’s will face next last year’s semi-final opponent Bern Cardinals at Saturday, July 5 at the Klopstockwiese.

The Challengers finish in third place at the Qualifier European Cup Tournament at Brest, Belarus with a 3-2 record. James Sanders was credited with the win and the save, while Tobias Siegrist belted two triples and drove in a game-high five runs, as the Challengers posted a 12-8 victory over BK Vilnius from Lithuania on Friday, June 20 in what was their final game of the tournament. The Ukrainian champion KNTU Kirovograd won the best-of-three final series 2-1 against the host Brest Zubrs. Meanwhile the Swiss champion Bern Cardinals won the Qualifier Tournament at Brno, Czech Republic. After reaching the final with a perfect 5-0 record the Cards sweeped Kranjski Lisjaki from Slovenia in the best-of-three final series. The Challengers won for the second time at the Qualifier European Cup Tournament at Brest, Belarus improving their record to 2-2. Starter Thomas Burger went six innings, while James Sanders tossed the final three frames, as the Challengers posted a 9-5 victory over Stockholm, currently first-ranked in the Swedish Elitserien, in Game 4. The offense produced timely hits and the defense turned two crucial double-plays, one of them a 1-2-3 double-play with the bases loaded. The Softball-Team (7-1) will face the Rümlang Kobras (6-2) on Sunday, June 22 at Rümlang Rümelbach. The games start at 11am and 1.30pm.
The Zürich Pilots , the U12-Juveniles-Team with players from the Embrach Rainbows, Zurich Lions and the Challengers travels to Therwil on Sunday, June 22 where they will play against the Berner Bears and the Rümlang Kobras. The games start at noon and 2pm.

The Challengers lost Game 3 at the Qualifier European Cup Tournament at Brest, Belarus droping their record to 1-2. The Ukrainian champion KNTU Kirovograd held the Challengers offense to two hits, as the Ukainians rolled to a 11-1 victory over the Swiss Cup winner. Starter Jerome Müller went 4 innings for the C’s, while Tobias Siegrist pitched the final 2 frames. The C’s were defeated 1-10 by the Belorussian champion Brest Zubrs, as the Belorussian pitchers held the Challengers to two hits. Starter Andy Fleischacker went 4 1/3 innings for the C’s, while James Sanders pitched the final 3 2/3 frames. The Challengers have now a 1-1 record after beating Uks Deby Osielsko from Poland on opening day and will face the Ukrainian champion KNTU Kirovograd (1-1) on Wednesday, June 18 at 9.30am. The Challengers won their opening game at the Qualifier European Cup Tournament at Brest, Belarus. The C’s posted a 7-4 victory over Uks Deby Osielsko from Poland. And it was not the only success for Swiss Baseball, as the Bern Cardinals won their opening game against the Trnava Angels from Slovakia 6-4 at the Qualifier Tournament at Brno, Czech Republic as well.
