Siegrist named MVP for third time

Tobias Siegrist earned his third MVP award, as he was presented with the trophy at the General Assembly on January 11. Siegrist led the Challengers with 20 RBI’s, 25 hits and 18 runs scored. He also finished second in doubles with 9, homers with 2, stolen bases with 10, batting average with .357, on-base percentage with .459 and slugging percentage with .571. Jesus Martinez set team-leading marks with five homers, a .367 batting average, a .474 on-base percentage and a .733 slugging percentage and finished second with 17 RBI’s, 22 hits and 16 runs scored, earning him the Best Batter award. Thomas Burger walked away with his second Best Pitcher award after receiving the trophy already in 2006, going 4-5 with a 4.47 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 54.1 innings pitched.

Winter practice 2008/2009

The winter practice for the Zurich Challengers Softball Team starts at October 21 and takes place every TUESDAY from 6pm till 7.45pm at the Turnhalle Lavater at the Schulhausstrasse 1 in Zurich-Enge (Tram 7 to Museum Rietberg).
Das Wintertraining für das Zürich Challengers Softball Team beginnt am 21. Oktober und findet jeden DIENSTAG von 18.00-19.45 Uhr in der Turnhalle Lavater an der Schulhausstr. 1 in Zürich-Enge statt (Tram 7 bis Museum Rietberg).

Ladies travel to Bulgaria

The Softball-Team travels to the Bulgarian city of Dupnitsa, where they will participate at this year’s Softball European Cup Winners Cup Women B from September 1 till 6. The C’s will play against Mladost Scorpions from Croatia, Evriali Glyfadas from Greece, Odense Giants from Denmark and the Bulgarian team Athletic Sofia. They will play a double round robin, the top four will move into the Final Round which will be played with the page system.

C’s beat BK Vilnius, finish in Third Place

The Challengers finish in third place at the Qualifier European Cup Tournament at Brest, Belarus with a 3-2 record. James Sanders was credited with the win and the save, while Tobias Siegrist belted two triples and drove in a game-high five runs, as the Challengers posted a 12-8 victory over BK Vilnius from Lithuania on Friday, June 20 in what was their final game of the tournament. The Ukrainian champion KNTU Kirovograd won the best-of-three final series 2-1 against the host Brest Zubrs. Meanwhile the Swiss champion Bern Cardinals won the Qualifier Tournament at Brno, Czech Republic. After reaching the final with a perfect 5-0 record the Cards sweeped Kranjski Lisjaki from Slovenia in the best-of-three final series. It is for the first time ever that a Swiss team has won a Qualifier Tournament. Further informations: Schedule

Challengers on the Road

The 1.Liga-Team (4-4) will open the weekend with asingle game against the Romanshorn Submarines (5-3) on Saturday, June 21 at 10am at Romanshorn.
The Softball-Team (7-1) will face the Rümlang Kobras (6-2) on Sunday, June 22 at Rümlang Rümelbach. The games start at 11am and 1.30pm.
The Zürich Pilots , the U12-Juveniles-Team with players from the Embrach Rainbows, Zurich Lions and the Challengers travels to Therwil on Sunday, June 22 where they will play against the Berner Bears and the Rümlang Kobras. The games start at noon and 2pm.

Swiss Cup: Farewell to Old Heerenschürli with derby

In the 3rd round of this year’s Swiss Cup, the Challengers lost the final game at the Heerenschürli 13-3 against their cross-town rivals Zürich Barracudas. Nderim Coma dominated the Challengers’ bats, and Andi Rüesch came up big for the Cudas with two homers and two singles in four trips to the plate, collecting six RBI’s along the way. It was the very last game on the Old Heerenschürli field before the renewal of the Heerenschürli sports facilities. The opening of the new field will take place in spring 2010.

Challengers down 0-2

The Challengers were beaten by the Bern Cardinals 11-5  and 21-4 in the first two games of the Playoff Finals. While the first contest was a close affair, Game 2 was over after four innings, due to many mistakes in the Challengers’ defense. Now the team needs to find a way to win three straight to prevent the Cardinals from winning their third straight title.
Game 3 will take place in Bern on September 29.

Challengers geiwnnen Swiss Cup

Die Challengers machten die Überraschung im diesjährigen Swiss Cup perfekt indem sie die Favoriten Bern Cardinals mit 6-2 schlugen und damit ihren zweiten Cuptitel nach 2004 errangen. Das Finalspiel war der passende Höhepunkt eines von den Therwil Flyers perfekt organisierten Wochenendes. Thomas Burger lieferte eine herausstehende Leistung ab, indem er das gesamte Spiel durchpitchte. Seine Verteidigung half ihm dabei mit sehenswerten Spielzügen. Fünf Hits im vierten und ein Error in achten Inning trugen zu allen nötigen Punkte für die Challengers bei um den Titel zu holen. Im vorangegangenen Halbfinal besiegten die Challengers die Lausanne Indians mit 19-7, dies unter anderem durch die super Leistung von Starting Pitcher Harry Bregy und Reliever Geovanni Ureña. Die Meisterschaft nimmt ihren Betrieb wieder am 1.September mit den Playoff Halbfinals auf, wo die Challengers auf den Sieger des Doubleheaders zwischen den Zürich Barracudas und Reussbühl Eagles treffen werden.

Challengers split with Cudas

The Challengers split the doubleheader against their cross-town rivals Zurich Barracudas on Sunday. The Challengers used some big hits to win Game 1 14-11. Thomas Burger pitched six innings for the win, while Thomas Landis picked up a save in three innings of work. Game 2 was a back-and-fourth battle, with the Challengers taking a 3-0 lead that got erased by a big six-run sixth inning by the Barracudas. The Challengers regained the lead in the top of the ninth by scoring four times for an 8-6 lead. But the Cudas came back in bottom half, getting the winning run on a sac fly by Nderim Coma for a 9-8 win. The Challengers have locked up second place for the Playoffs, while the Barracudas still have to battle for third place against the Reussbuhl Eagles on August 25.
